Does setting the ride height to make it sit lower make the shock perform differently. does it soften/stiffin the springs? I know it affects the handling but what about jumping and stuff?

you can use your comp/rebound to make up for any difference in performance. to adjust my suspension i set the bike on jacks to get the tires off the ground. then i back off the preload till the adjuster just touches the spring. i just use my compression to adjust firmness. the shock performs better in my opinion. i am a strong believer in useing the least amount of preload possible.

What do you mean back off the preload till the adjuster touches the spring? the red anodized nut? Mine is always touching the spring no matter which way i turn it, even when it is up on stands.

Note: I recommend moving your "ride height" settings in small increments.
