On a trail ride tonight on the 300ex......all is going well, and she starts ticking really hard........I can smell what is like oil burning.......and in less than 30 seconds, I lose compression. It all goes to sh*t. Motor will not crank...turns over, but that is all. I got nothing.

I know something is cooked, and I need a top end. Why so sudden????? Anyone ever experience this or have any suggestions???????

And to make it all worse.....I had to be towed home by a Kawisaki !!!!!!!!

Sounds like you broke a piston or burn't a hole in it.

It sure as heck smelled like a burnt piston. Did not give me much warning though, thats for sure. I am jsut kinda wondering why so sudden? It is only an 01, stock, and has not had a hard life......

dont laugh but i have seen those adjustment screws on the tappets(rock arms) loosen up and start makin all kinds of tickin, they could have backed out far enough to not open the valves, thats where your loss of comp is going, especially if its the intake side

Probably caused from lack of oil if you burnt the pistion.

Or, jetted too lean.

Did you rejet for the pipe/filter if you got aftermarket?

20w-50 honda GN4 at the proper level (it's Florida!).

Jetted stock, with the stock pipe and Uni Filter.

I am hoping it is an adjuster, 2muchquad. That would definitely be the easiest. It's killin me!!.......................:(

May be a tad lean.. but not enough to burn anything up.

It's probably had 5 good years on it.. so it may just be time for some TLC. ;)

The OIL FILTER was in BACKWARDS!!!! AAAArrrrrggghhhhh! Oh well, nothing like a 500 dollar mistake to teach me to pay attention next time. I feel like a jackass. I have been wrenching on motors since I was 14 (I am 28 now) and have NEVER done anything so stupid. Guess I was due for a flub of somekind. Thanks for all of your suggestions, guys.

Now go ahead and laugh, I can take it.

I know how you feel. The guy who I brought my 300ex from said that he had it serviced and they put the oil filter in. Well they installed the oil filter in backwards. Over heated and cost me $300.

Well, she shut off on me, and seems to have lost compression. I am hoping that the entire top end is not trashed. Sounds like more than just overheating................ We'll see.

Lack of compression is probably the piston rings.

But, yea, just tear her down from the piston up, and give her a good inspection.

well i have heard of the filter backwards thing and its a lesson for sure. maybe its not a total loss, if others read this thread they can learn from your mistake. (just looking at the bright side). best to check the whole top end out at least good luck. and if its too bad you may just have to build it a little faster. thats what i would do if i already had her apart and all.
