I have the ribbed (Dune Trackers) fronts and they are a handfull in wet sand. They work so good that they'll pitch you off the bike if you're not hanging on!

I don't know about the smoothies... haven't see anyone running them here (Silver Lake, MI).

Smoothies are more forgiving at high speeds, Mohawks and ribbed tires get squirly and will sometimes take you where they want if you don't have a stabilizer.

Are you able to get it to turn with smoothes? Seems like it would always want to go straight?

i have hte mohawks (just one row of knobs down the middle) and they turn just as well as the stockers do in the sand i think, and if you get just the right amount of air pressure in them you almost cant bend the rims with them.

So has anybody figured out which ones work better? Do the smooth buffs work at all turning?

I run Dune Trackers on 8in wide wheels w/ 4psi. No complaints. They turn and float well on the sand and jumps don't hurt em'.

I think if you're using the straight paddles you will probably need the ribbed fronts just to be able to turn.
if you're using the angled paddles, I think you will be able to go with the smoothies, which shoud be better because (in theory) they would be lighter, and should have less drag.

then again it comes down to personal prefrance. I would think, high speed, straight line; smoothies. turn on a dime, sometime pull you into ruts, better at slower speeds; ribbed.

Most people that I see running the smoothies are just doing straight drag races. The smoothes ride well on big open dunes as well but once you need to make tight turn or try to do some crazy hill climbs you will be toast with the smoothies. I run the Mohawks on both our bikes and they work well as long as you keep a decent amount of air pressure in them. They have a soft side wall so sand can get in the bead real easy if they are not fully inflated (almost rock hard) and that leads to a flat like no other. Trust me, it's no fun riding back to camp with a flat. My buddies that run the razorbacks or dune trackers don't seem to have the same problems with popping the tire off the bead or filling it full of sand. The choice is yours but if you plan to do more the just straight line racing or open dune riding I wouldn't go with the smoothies.
