build my engine for the same power as the 660.

what do i need besides the engine and associated cooling and oil parts do i need to swap a 660 raptor engine into my 400EX?or what would i need to do to the engine to get close to the same power as the 660?i rode one today and it wheelies much better than mine and had more low end to it.i dont like the way it handled though.i think a 660 engine/power in my 400EX would make a sweet ride.

i think it would be easier to just get a raptor and make it wider

just my 2 cents

just build your 400ex motor up. get a good exhaust and air filter, then get a 416 kit with a cam, those kits are pretty cheap and put out good power. maybe port and polish the head and a put a 39mm fcr on it and you will have more power than stock raptor.

I agree, you should just build up the 400 motor. I could walk all over my buddie's piped and jetted Raptor when I had a mild 10:1 440 kit and Webcam in my engine.

Now, with my new engine (all mods in sig), it's not even a question of IF I will be faster.

why dont you build an xr600 engine in your ex it is aircooled so no licuid cooling parts to build in and its about the same size as an xr400 engine + it has kickstart

This is what we did to my brother in laws race bike a few years ago. For the money and power you get and him racing the bike it'll still beat almost anything on the track. But all in all if just want power you can just go out and get trx450 and a few mods but to each his own.

Hope this helps.

to just make a 400ex fast as a raptor your will need
500cc kit ($800)
larger oil cooler (around $120)
sparks x6 pipe

all that u pushin 50hp

a piped raptor puts out close to 50hp

Not necessarily, but it all depends on what a person means by "faster". What are we talking here? Short drags, long drags, on the track?

IMO, the short drag will determine which quad has more "grunt" to it. It takes all the torque a quad can make to win in a short drag. A longer drag race on the other hand, will be more about gear ratios and transmission gear ratios. The chassis setup will also play a large role.

Back in the day, all I had was a Wiseco 10:1 440 kit, Webcam 450/451 cam, and a CT midrange full exhaust.

My buddy had a Raptor with a Pro Design filter kit, full CT exhaust (big power adder for the Raptor), and was fully jetted. I agree that this will get the rappy close to 50 HP at the flywheel.

But every short drag we did, I took him. I took him out of the hole and he never caught up to me. We both had 18" holeshots out back btw. The raptor just had too much initial wheelspin and not enough power transfer. This is the differences in the chassis talking.

Now if it was a full-out long distance drag, obviously he is going to win due to the longer tranny ratios. However, both quads were set up for MX, and top-end speed means nothing on the MX track.

When it comes to having a fast quad. What is "fast" will all depend on the application.

Personally....If you were serious about it... I would drop a YZ426F / YZ450F engine in rather than build on the 400ex engine if you need major power gains. The 400ex is old technology, you won't be able to cough insane power out of it, besides, it would be a good idea to have a liquid cooled engine when your runnin them hard.

They sell engines on ebay ready to go, and if i'm not mistaken you can buy engine mounts for the 400ex-yz426

There was a dyno sheet for the CT high-output exhaust in a test in dirtwheels a while back. It was pretty darn close to 50 I can tell you, I was surprised. This is with the pro flow filter and jet kit though, which my friend had. Really woke that thing up.

i doubt it had 50. i dont believe many dynoes and that was definately wong i think. think of it john natalies bike last year had 53 horses so your saying if u put just a pipe on a raptor your almost as close in horsepower as a pro mx bike. i dont think so.

you should put a yz426 dirtbike motor in it it will smoke the 660 i have a hybrid yz426ex and it is extreamly amould of power and speed

There is no way a piped raptor will get 50 hp.

well i seen adyno a piped rapto putting out 44hp.

my 400ex has a drag pipe and no air box n k&n filter. and the rear shock stays bottomed out. i can beet are stock raptor in a 200yd drag.
like for me i dont know why but i can take off reving around 8000 rpm and just dump the clutch on the road and take of like i had a wheelie bar. the tires let loose and spin. on take off i pull around 3 quad lengths on the stock raptor.

if u want to drag then. add a 500cckit + nos + turbo = over 80 hp:eek2:

dont wanna drag, dont race on a track.just some trail, woods and freestyle.i just want the low end power that the raptor has.i dont care for speed, going 70+MPH on one of these things is asking for trouble.i dont care about loseing a little of my top speed to gain some low end power.i dont want to run race fuel, then theres no fun in riding the thing since race fuel around here over 6.00 a gallon.

02-28-2006, 08:09 AM
well then i would just put a 416 kit in it and one tooth smaller front sprocket.
but if i was you i would put a stroker kit in it. stroker kits are one of the most relible things u can do to a motor and strokers are mostly low end gain. you can get a 460 cc kit for $550 out of motorsportoutlet

a cam wouldnt be a bad idea eather.

Amen brother. I think the EXACT same way. :D
