A couple of days ago, i bought a 250r, but the guy had no idea what year it was. He raced it and most of the parts on it are not stock, so i cant really go by anything obvious like the plastic, etc.... The only thing that's probably left to show the year is the frame, so what is different from year to year with the frames, so i can find out what year this thing is?

10th digit in the v.i.n:
G= 86
H= 87
J= 88
K= 89

I'm not shure about the vin numbers. The 86/87 frames have the vin number on the lower left part of the subframe. The 86 frame has an extra gusset welded in under the front motor mounts that no other year has. The front motor mount on the 86 is also different. The 88/89 had the vin number moved to the front of the frame between the front shock mounts. The 88/89 also had a crossmember/motor mount going across the middle of the rear part of the frame.

You are correct on the VIN numbers, but as most race Rs don't have them, the motor mounts are a good way to tell as well as the footpegs. If you don't know what I mean, check the microfiche.

For the motor, check the color of paint. grey=86/87. Black = 88/89, spacerplate will indicate running 86 piston.
