I just bought a new 05 400ex. I had an 03 before. This new one is changed a little. It has a plastic skid plate and front chain gaurd. Any rec on aftermarket skid plates?? What did Honda do exactly to the gear ratios on the 05's and 06's? Any problems or concerns with the reverse set up on these quads?

they dropped the front sprocket from a 15 to a 14. Make sure the reverse recall has been done on your 05, if so, then you should have no problems. enjoy!

Hes got it pretty much covered. As for skid plates I would go with a PRM (thick version) or Pro Armor. Swingarm skids are pretty much necessary if you do any off road riding.

Didn't they also change the internal transmission gearing? Is anyone running a 13 tooth (1 down) on their '05/'06 & what do you think? Anyone gone up in the back?

im running a 13 front.i like it but have been considering going up 2 teeth on the reari dont need speed as much as i need low end grunt.i dont race i ride trails and try to do wheelies and stuff as well as climbing big hills.i believe the internal gearing was changed due to the reverse.my buddy has an 04 400ex.he went down 1 tooth in front cuz he said it felt geared a little too high for the trails.he rode mine when i got it before i changed the front sprocket and said it felt just like his.i still need to get the reverse recall done on mine but i havent had any problems yet so i keep forgetting about it.

2 things i dont like about the reverse is that the bike wont start if your in reverse.and the knob forthe safety.id much rather have the reverse safety up on the bars.its kinda a pain if you stall it in reverse or you need to back out of a hairy situation where the bike wants to flip or roll and you dont want to move around too much in fear of it flipping/rolling over
