This place is about 10 mins from my house, i know he builds custom turbos for quads. He does alot of diesel performance work as well.

That 400ex that is on ebay is my cousins. It screams let me tell you. We live in Iowa so it is hard to find good places to ride with it. Lined up with a Z400 it was pretty even till about 3rd gear when the turbo kicked in and it blew it away. He has put a lot of work into that thing. He is going to college next year so I am guessing that he needs the money for that.

what about superchargers ?

440_Turtle
02-23-2006, 02:37 PM
superchargers generally run off a belt drive and quads dont have cerpentine belds i think that it might be able to be done with some MAJOR bottom end work. there are companies out there that sell gear driven chargers for harley davidsons that are gear driven on teh bottom end somehow. but yoru talking about MAJOR $$$$"S for a 1 off system

not only major cash for the supercharger/turbo but also the life of your engine goes out the window, a quad with a turbo on it has the engine life reduced by 60%

Do you have any experience with engines? As long as you upgrade the neccesary parts and run a decent compression ratio you will not reduce your engine life. Decent compression by the way, is in the 8:1 range. Do you know what a semi is? Do you know how many have turbos on them? Many modern engines are designed for using turbos and it's not uncommon to see a million mile motor equipped with a turbo.

It is entirely possible to run a supercharger on a 400ex. The timing cover provides a way to the crankshaft to turn a gear driven supercharger. With the right pulley ratios I'm sure you can easily get 6-7 psi of boost.

Just face it. If you but a turbo on a quad, your reliability is gone.

It depends on the motor for what a reasonable comp. ratio is. With a turbo, the comp. must be very low. Diesel engines are very high. It all depends on the type of motor.

There are better ways than a turbo to make power on a quad. Naturally aspired engines do better in the ATV world.

hey stud why do you feel that naturally aspirated is so much better. The only reason they are better is because it hasnt been done very much and the cost. Reliability doesnt have to go down, if built correct.
