Wanting to change the gearing on my bike from 14-38 to 14-39. I was told to change chain and both sprockets when changing. Both sprockets are in great shape and so is the chain. If i only change the rear sprocket will i mess up my chain?

i would, unless they are really new...the chain and sprockets are a wear item, that wear togther. it is possible that if the chain is wore enough, it will not track as well on the new sprocket and jump off of it...i have seen this happen

but if you are just going to test it out...you should be ok...if you like the set-up, change the front sprocket and chain also...that will leave you with a back-up set in case of an emergency

first off one tooth change in the rear isnt going to realy change much.

and on my 400ex a while ago i baught a sprocket 2 teath smaller and the chain was to long. but if i would have just went down 1 tooth instead 2 i could have got away with just ajusting the chain.

so u might be able to just ajust it out.
