My engine is stock, it is a 04' 400ex. I have a UNI filter and a HMF full system sport series exhaust. Will running race gas in my quad be good or will it screw it up? By the way where can you buy race gas??

It may actually hurt your performance. I am not sure why but others on here may be able to help out.

Yeah, It seems that I have seen that somewhere else as well. I am just curious if it will hurt my performance any.... If anything I would think that it would help keep the engine clean.

you wont really notice the power loss, infact its probably like only 1 or 2 % loss. but you definetly will not gain power. the only reson you should run race gas is if you have a high comp piston that is knocking, or if you have a really big, big bore and you want it to run a little cooler.

It will burn a little cooler & cleaner but wont gain anything but carbin on the head. low octan gas burns faster than high octan gas. Thats why racers use high octan fuel in high compression engines to keep the head cool & out of detination. Hope this helps you all

thats right. It burns slower, cleaner and cooler. Alot of peole run race gas because the leads in the fuel help lube the cylinder creating longer life out of the engine. I wouldnt run race gas unless you have to (hi comp.)

I was thinking about tearing it all down and putting in a stage 2 cam and a 14:1 piston. If i did that should i switch to racing gas???

14:1 is pretty scary dude, imo 13:1 is the highest you should do on a quad, especialy one thats air cooled. and if you did run a 13:1 race gas would be a good idea

Can you even get a 14:1 of an air-cooled? Even if you could, it would be problem, after problem, after problem, after problem.

Yeah, now that i think of it, it was a 12:1. Sorry, I am kinda new at the whole 4 stroke thing.

so if i got a 330 or 345 big bore kit for my mojave i would have to run race gas all the time? Does anyone kno how much it cost for a case bore?

it depends on your compression. and how your motor responds to it. if its running hot or pinging or knocking, i would run race gas.

What is the octane on race gas?

It varies. The most common used is 110 octane.. but it starts at as low as 96 octane and goes up. Depends on your situation.

Most get 110 octane, and will mix it 50/50 with premium pump on a 12:1 air cooled, or 13:1 water cooled motor. Cheaper than buying 103 and running it straight.

Oh and 14:1 compression is definatly possible on an air cooled 400ex. But, engine longevity goes down in a hurry. ;)

10.8:1 I beleive is the most common compression for the 400ex, as it allows you to run premium pump. 12:1 with race fuel will give you an edge, but wether it's worth the extra fuel cost depends on the situation.

Of course these are our ATV's, it not about efficency and sensibility. If we wanted that we'd be driving a Suzuki Swift and never leave the road, lol. ;)

On 110 i could tell my motor ran hotter, which kills power, now i run about 1/2 gallon of 110 in a 5 gallon jug and add 93 to that 1/2 gallon of 110. runs right now.

Was it oxeygnated? If it is it will make you run lean, since it already has oxygen in it, causing you to have to jet richer. Sounds like what happened. Standard race fuel should make you run cooler.

I also mix about 10-20% 110 into my 91 octane "Missouri" premium when I go to the dunes out, and it's nice and hot out, to avoid detonation. I also run 11:1 in my 330.

13 to 1 compression and haven't turned a wrench on it in 9-10 months. RELIABILTY IS POSSIBLE! Run straight 110 race gas with a 42mm carb and a 220 main jet. Now someone go ahead and make the comment I have to be running to rich... Na, not really... MSD Ignition my friends....
