I have some liquid gasket called "the right stuff", will that work on the starter reduction gear cover? The bottle says it forms elastomeric rubber gaskets and works at up to 450 degrees. Is that what I need? Any tips to help get it right the first time?

it should work, just dont put too much on.

That's what's sealing my dad's water pump on his ZRT 800. He said enough with the damn o-rings.
