I have a 1997 300ex piped jeted hotcam and i just ported it out when it sats there pops and kracks but when you ride it and open it up it runs fine until you let off the gas and it is only fine if the throttle is wide open

exhaust leak?---jetting is too lean?

if u didn't rejet it aftet the port then it needs it bc the air and fuel flow throu there faster

I didn't know hotcams made a cam for the 300ex. i've looked on there website many of times and never seen one.

I don't beleive they currently do. They used to at one time, but as demand fell they dropped it. If he got a hotcam, it was probably some leftover stock someone had.

If he did his own port job (:eek2: ), I hope he didn't, he could have hit the valve seats with the grinder. If he did, that could very well be the problem. Even the slightest touch of the valve seats with the grinder will really screw things up.
