My 400 leaks gas when i shake it side to side, so im guessin its the float bowl. I took my carb off and i dont know how to get to it to clean the float. do i just take out the big bolt at the bottom or do i take out the 3-4 small screws around it?

It's the 4 small screws around it.

If you're unsure, I'd suggest buying a repair manual (also called a service manual). It will outline a procedure for taking the carburetor apart and cleaning it.

Whenever I take the carb apart, I use about half a can of carb cleaner to clean the whole thing. Spray through every fuel path, take the slide out and clean it, take out the float valve and inspect it, the works.

Don't just pull the float bowl. Take the entire carb off the bike and sit down with it and go throught the whole thing.

If your carb is leaking, I assume it's coming out the overflow. Sounds like a dirty or bad float valve to me, make sure to take it out and inspect it.

k got it all opened up and the float moves up and down fine....what now? it doesnt appear to be dirty...

EDIT: and can/should i replace the 4 screws that hold the float bowl on, because i sorta stripped them, and i doubt i will ever be able to get them off again if i put them back in.....that is, if i can tighten them down:eek: :grr:

You may have better luck at an automotive store, I don't know if HD carries metric. I'd get allen head bolts if possible.

I would get some allen head screws. They will be much easier to remove next time you need to take it apart.

I'm pretty sure it's #30 on the schematic, 4x14.
