I don't think you would go wrong with a Ruger MK II or MK III. You may also want to look into a S&W Model 41. They are great target pistols, but they come with a higher price tag than the Rugers.

If you are looking for a good pistol try finding a older smith@wesson 42 or a High Standard Victor all of the
pistol like Rugers an Browning are not for the serious shooter.

Mark II Slabside Government model or Mark III Hunter.

Try rimfirecentral.com for decent info on rimfires.

I have 3 of the Rugers...............The Brownings are nice too, my cousin has one..........I have the Mark I, II, and III...
For the money the Rugers are hard to beat.......I like the MARKIII stainless, Fluted bull barrel with wood target grips.....Awesome looking gun

Rugers are very dependable and accurate, I haven't had much experience with Brownigs, but they just aren't popular in my area. I would definately recommend a Ruger though, I looked at one yesterday actually.

I've generally had good luck with Rugers, but the Mk II I bought 2 years ago is a POS. I had to send it back to be rebarreled because it wouldn't eject live rounds. They put on a whole new receiver and barrel and now it will not chamber reliably. Since I compete with my pistols, this is unacceptable.

If I were buying today I would be trying a Browning or low end S&W. Beretta has an inexpensive .22 called the Neos. Very good reviews. If you want a first classs newer gun, the S&W Model 42 will work.

If you only want a plinker or for casual competition, there's a lot of good stuff for $250-$350.

Don't let me scare you away from Ruger, but right now I'm ticked with them.
