A little while back I sunk my quad completely in a river, I dried it all out and changed the oil but I didnt bother with taking off and cleaning the carb. I went out for a ride after putting it back together and it was running fine, then it started buring oil like crazy and i lost all my power. I figure it was from dirt getting into my engine through the carb and ruining my rings and maybe more. But now im wondering if i should leave it the stock bore, or put a 416 kit or maybe a 440 kit in. I go to the track once in a while but I mostly ride fast trails. What would be best? And does putting in one of those kits make your quad un-reliable?

I would put the 416 in it. It would get all the scratches out and it would give you more power without sacrificing the reliability. Lots of people have the 416 or the 440 so they should last.

get the 416, the 440 puts alot of stress on your motor, and IMO, i think it makes the walls pretty thin. if you got the 416, you would be satisfied.

The 440 requires a re-sleeve so it doesn't make the cyclinder walls thin.
I've ridden bolth, I had a 416 , 11:1 piston, professionally ported head, stage 3 hotcam .. And I prefered the 440 over the 416 hands down for any riding situation.
The power of the 440 was so much better, I don't care what anyone says.

My engine is still pretty stock but I would say the 416 kit. From what I hear, the 416 will give good performance gains and result in a freer-reving motor, where the 440 gives more torque, but while sacrificing reliability. If you want more torque, go with a 426.

i say go with the 416. you can always go bigger later on, but once you've got the 440 there's no turnin back.

440 baby - get the grunt - - and when ya' go 440 why would ya' want to "turn back" - mine is verry reliable - ALOT of hrs. racin/ridin over the last few yrs. w/ NO probs - just make sure ya' get a good head gasket - thats the spot some have probs - my powroll gasket hasn't ever leaked - and besides who would want a lil' ol' 416 kit???

damn, alot of mixed messages here... is it any harder to sell a quad that has been bored out vs. one with the stock size piston?

Unless you race hard core, a 416 should suit you very well. Because it is only 2 sizes from stock it should retain the reliability. Will a cam and some head work they can blow stock 450s, just ask rico:p .

i got the 416 w/ JE 10.8, hotcam stage 2, and shaved head. and i can tell the biggest diffrence. i love it. i can hang w/ a stock 450 and can whoop some *** when i race my friend whos got a 400 w/ just a cam. i give him a head start and still pass him. its got so much more torqe. i love it. i went w/ the 416 because i can always go bigger, and i heard they rev faster too. ive heard the 440s run hot if you do any slow trail ridin.

blah blah blah. I have a 426 and a 440. Anyone who sez a 440 does not rev should ride one built like mine. You will need to use a good carb with any big bore kit to get the most out of it. I will tell you my 440 outruns my 426 in every type of riding, hands down. Both are built very similar as far as carbs, pipes, etc.

I would suggest replcaing it with a better carb. I will be running an Edelbrock Doug Eichner series 440 carb in mine. I like the way the carb looks, it seems that it should do well. Aside from this, there is alot of carbs that you could run. The 450r carb is one of them, however, beware.... you WILL have to do some "Slight" mods for the carb to work. Check around... see what is the easiest and most affordable for you.

In the end, you could always modify your stock carb, but you won't see the typical results that would come from a change of carb entirely.

the keihin 39mm fcr feeds my 440 as good as it could be - i'd deff. recomend it to anyone w/ a bore kit - HUGE difference

I heard that the Edelbrock carbs aren't that good. Is this true? My dealere said that they didn't recommend them.

Couldn't tell you yet, but I would say a big no on that one based on reviews and dyno charts.

If you arent willing to spend the money on porting and valve train work, carb mods etc...And just want to freshen up your quad with a little extra pep go with a plus .040 11: piston and a stage 1 cam.Mod airbox slip on pipe and rejet carb.Best bang for your buck. These guys really do have alot of good info and the 440 will have more power if you have the money to do it right. My ex ran well but used oil and I went with a plus .020 11:1 wiseco and all of the above mentioned mods.I am sure it will run very nicely and be a reliable premium fuel machine.
