When the bike is warmed up, it idles fine. When I start it when cold, the choke does not work at all. Its starts fine but you have to keep your thumb on the throttle.

Is there an adjustment on the choke or do I have to fool around with the pilot screw? (I have not really looked yet nor have I ridden it yet! Bought Fri! And have had no time to ride it yet!)

you have to keep yourthumb on the throttle to keep it running.start it on full choke and keep it running for about a minute, turn the choke down one click and keep hitting thethrottle a little till it idles on its own,let it idle for 5-10 minutes and turn the choke off and go for a ride.

read your owners manual and it will tell you how to start it in cold wheather

My bike acts the same way but my sons doesn't. I took notice that his ides alittle higher than mine so i turned the idle screw just an 1/8 turn and my bike is much better now.

on my '00 400ex..if i turn idle screw for engine run without thumb on throttle...when engine if hot, the idle is too fast( 3000rpm)

i adjust my idle speed hot at 1400rpm
turn out pilot screw 3 1/2 out total
change pilot jet for #42

now, when cold starting,
full choke and keep thumb on throttle for 20sec after is good

ps. this mod is for canada i don t know if work for you

Take the choke off and put in a 42 pilot jet like the last guy said. I could never get mine to start in cold weather without a little starter fluid anyways.

thats just normal warm up procedure..once you engine gets broke in u can adjust on your carb some...like the idlescrew and jets or air/fuel mix screw to get it fine tuned. But your 400ex is doing nothing different than any other 400ex
