you just check the ring end gap and make sure it has the proper clearance, and just so you know you cant hone or bore a nikasil coated cylinder

I honed my cr250(nikasil) cylinder ever time I put a new piston in it(Helps seat the rings) you can hone any cylinder.(maybe I am wrong if I am someone let me know because when I put a new piston in my 06 trx I will run a quick hone threw it.). Always was after 60 dec cross hatch and to take the smooth and shinny surface away.:huh

You can deglaze a plated cylinder with oven cleaner. Just don't leave it on more than 20 or 30 minutes.

the main objective is to get the polished surface textured again.

Honing does that but It most likely takes away some of the coating also.

The oven cleaner sounds like it might be the ticket. Although I have never tried it personally.

You are not supposed to hone a plated cylinder.

now common sense would say of course you cant hone a nikasil cylinder, but I believe there are alot of people who either dont know any better or have an explanation as to why they hone nikasil.

Does anyone have any input on this?

I asked mark baldwin about this on the phone and he said do not touch it with a hone unless you have 3,000 dollar hone and he sounded pretty well set against honing so I wouldn't do it.

You want a very light hone, just to break the glaze. Nickisl is crazy hard.

If you over hone it won't help your rings seat because there won't be anything left of them

i usually gently clean my cylinder with steel wool. then wash it in soap and water several times so it is perfectly clean, or as close to perfect as you can get.

you should hone with a diamond tip bar hone or nothing.
