WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed WD-40 back in 1953. The chemist, Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion -- a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try.

WD-40 was developed for NASA to dry out areas in the shuttle to keep it from freezeing in space. like Sly said, it is literally Water Displacement, 40th attempt.

i say no, not safe as it dries out the o-rings, i would rather spend $7 a can for PJ1 than risk my $80 chain.

its not water displacement, its weapons development and the 40 comes from the 40 active ingrediants, and it was used in the forties to help with the nuclear weapons program:o , just thought ya'll should know what it really was!

Used it for a year on the old 300ex, and no problems at all.
