WD-40 or chain lube.

which is better, and what do you guys use?

this is my input on it:

chain lube:
pros-lasts a long time, decent lubrication
cons-collects dust, dirt, forms grime

wd-40:
pros-great lubrication, rust prevention, cheaper then chain lube, cleans the chain, does not collect, dust dirt or form grime
cons-does not last very long.

i have been using pj1 chain lube for awhile, and it seems to lube good and all, but after a ride, my chain is all gunked up and dirty and crap. The pj1 gets really sticky when it dries. I have a DID x-ring chain, and im thinking about using wd-40 to prevent the build up of crap, plus it seems to move smoother, and lube better for some reason.

i had pj 1 and hated it because it was like water and then when it ran over everything and the chain it dried real sticky and just gunked up all the dirt i like the klotz in the red can

actually WD-40 will attract dirt and dust but its easier to wash it off.i use the brand name chain lube but have noticed it does get real sticky and keeps the dirt stuck to it more than WD-40.

I like chain lube because it is thicker and provides a longer lasting protection. WD-40 works good for cleaning a chain that has not been lubed in a while.

PJ1 tacky lube for woods/muddy conditions. Dirt will "stick" to it.. but it also keeps the dirt out from behind the o-rings which is what is important.

3in1 oil on it when hitting the sand dunes. Don't want sand tearing up my o-rings.

Not a big WD-40 fan.

i always use PJ1. maxima stuff is like water and sucks. Never use WD40 because it will actually dry out your O-Rings and lessen your chains life.

i use bel-ray, and it works great, if you have a problem with dirt sticking to your chain, maybe youre putting on too much or too often

you should never use wd-40 on your chain, after it sits for a week or so it make stuff rust, and it actualy provides little or no protction for the chain from dirt

There is also some stuff called chain wax I have used for the dunes and it works very well and does not make sand stick to it.

Actually in recent years WD-40's formula had been changed. It doesn't suck the oil out of the rubber anymore. It's now safe for the o-rings. 3in1 is a little heavier and lubricates the chain better, so I prefer it over WD-40 for the sand dunes.

I use Maxima Chain Wax. It is a good lube that seems to protect and lube the chain well. It does collect some dirt and grime, but not that bad. A good ocassional chain and sprocket cleaning with a wire brush or Grunge Brush does the trick to make it all look brand new. My buddy uses WD-40 on his 400, and hasn't had any problems/concerns yet either. I guess it's personal preference.

i use white lithium grease in a spray can. pretty much spray grease works good. its kinna like the stuff that you see on it when you chain is new.

I use Maxima Chain Wax also, great product. I did use PJ1 but even though it was the "No-Fly" stuff it still splattered all over my swingarm and looked horrible. I'll just stick to using PJ1 for cleaning and oiling my filter.

I use greaseless penetrating lube on the chain when practicing or just riding. Before a race I clean my chain real good and soak it in oil engine oil and work it around good then wipe off the excess. Works very well!
