starting problems with 03 raptor

i recently bought a 03 raptor that runs fine but the electric start doesnt catch, just spins the starter but sometimes itll crank it over for a few secs and then let go, i took the smaller side cover off to inspect what was going on inside and see that the bigger gear set in the back of the cover just spin freely, is that the starter clutch? also sometimes while running it sounds like everything inside that cover engages is that also the starter clutch?

I am no mechanic, but that sure sounds like the starter clutch.

when mine went it would just spin and grind when i hit the starter button

yep its the starter clutch my friends 01 got the same prob ...

It's the bearing in the starter clutch. They usually wear out in the 01-03 raptors after about a year or two of use. They cost around $200-$250 without installation!
