i haven't checked the valves yet ,you might be right about the lower octane fuel i didn't think about that,i'll change the gas and see.

Adjust your chain too, that makes a ticking noise, and it sounds simlar to valve noise. I have had my valves adjusted, and they still make some noise, I think it is just a noisy valve train.

I would adjust valves and timing chain first, it's probably not the fuel unless you have a high compression engine or really ****ty gas. Does the motor have alot of hours on it? If so you may be seeing the effects of some wear. I assume that you keep to oil and filter fresh?

the chain is self-adjusting,... dont turn it in and make it tighter, that will just make it wear faster,... BUT. what you can do is, wil the motor running,... turn the tensioner in and see if the noisy goes away, if it does then you probly need a new tensioner. ( i just had to replace mine)

The drive chain, not the cam chain.

The tension on the timing chain is adjustable and has a specific adjustment. Refer to your manual it will explain the entire process. I never heard of one wearing out, but it does get out of adjustment as the chain stretches and yes it will make a slapping or ticking noise
