For my riding, I prefer the 86 frame and swingarm over the 89. I'm pretty sure I can get a new 89 frame, or an aftermarket frame in the 89 style.

Anybody know if Honda still offers the 86-style frames?

According to what I just found they do.

This is from Service Honda website for an 86 frame.

Just because they have a part number listed does not mean they still continue to make it.

I just talked with Service Honda. It has been discontinued.

Yea honda stopped making the frames a while ago. But the only difference with the rear end of the 86/87 frames was the lack of a crossmember. I think that an 88/89 frame with a second motor mount welded in just in front of the linkage mount would be better, and stronger. Then just run an 86/87 length swingarm. As far as I know the geometry in the rear end is the same from all 4 years it was made.

86 and 87 had shorter swing arm. 88 and 89 had longer. the dog bones in all of them were different. so the rear end's arent the same thruout

Ya got it backwards, the 86/87 had the longer swingarms, and the 88/89 had a shorter one. Yes the linkages were different lengths from year to year, but any year linkage can be used with any year frame and swing arm. The different length in the linkages is to compensate for slightly different length shocks. You can raise or lower your ride hight to your riding style by mix matching the linkages and shocks.
