i am a professional carpenter and this jump is as sturdy as a slab of concrete.

Ha! If your a professional carpenter you had better turn in your tool belt tomorrow! My steel ramp has more bracing than that wood one. You'd be better off building a steel ramp or using dirt because the way your heading with that ramp it doesnt look safe. So when you end up with one of those 4X4's in your leg dont say I didnt warn you.

i actually i put quite a bit more bracing on than what you see in the picture and i can guarantee this ramp will last for years

Why's it so wide?

quader400
02-05-2006, 09:13 PM
cause thats how i roll... but really because im setting it up right out of a turn so it will be easy since its so wide and its a perfect two ply wood boards next to eachother

cool ramp!! looks plenty strong to me dont know what they are talking about. Thinking about make one myself

ok my that ramp has some serious issues that need addressed before you "finish it up" ok my steel ramp has more than twice the supports than that ramp which is a big deal when using a wood surface such as you are. ok whats goingoto happen if you jsut finish it like you have it now is that the ply is going to bend in between the joists (see red lines). now your supports that you have already look great those are fine (blue lines). now to fix it from bending in (it will break in actually and youll get hurt) you need alot more cross joists to spupport the plywood (see yellow lines) these should at least be made of 4x4s, your other joists appear to be made from 6x6s i think, you also need some angular ties in there to eliminate sway and to tie it together. (see green lines) now i dont care if you are a carpenter or not if you dont belive me you go ahead and get your self hurt on that ramp after it breaks in a month. hEEElllllllll i built my skate board halfpipe stronger than that would be as it is.

the truth be known I have built only dirt ramps till now.if all I had to work with was wood that looks good to me.but I would put plywood(treated)upright screwed and glued to the supports(at a right angle to your ramp surface)like making walls that run from front to the back .that would give support for the impact when you "hit the ramp"and create a lateral load.its too easy to push over a 6x6 that is standing straight up.you will double and triple the weight of you and your quad ,I believe, when it hits the ramp.

Yeah Jake I would add some more bracing, but it's obvious you're not done with it yet. That's awesome you're building a second one though, i'll hit you up the next time i'm home I wanna see the whole layout.

First off i did put alot more crossbracing on it than whats in the picture.. and second i am putting 8 sheets of plywood down with shingles on top there will be no flew or anything this thing will last years.. and phillips this jump is way more mellow than the last but my track is going to be sweet you should hit it up

wood is for bicycles that weight 15lbs., not for 400lbs. 4wheelers. Steel would be a much safer bet. Many people on this forum have built wood ramps and ended up busting through them.

Man I say just brace up the thing and hit it. Post pics up when you "break" it in. lol. I wanted to do the same thing you are but mine was going to be way smaller.

for teh record i never sadi wood wouldnt last you jsut have to make it 10x stronger than it needs to be but yea it should be good if you braced it more jsut dont skimp on the lateral bracing for the sides either post more pics when you get the chance im curious to see how well it turns out for you.

im not building no wooden ramp tho i have a steel one but i think the shinlges thing is cool ive seen it on dbikes ramps and it make sit look pretty cool

4 layers of ply may make it almost strong enough...either way, you're going to use about as much cash for wood as you would have just building a steel ramp :(

quader400

all the wood was free

cost me 60$ to build a 6ft tall steel ramp. Went to the steel yard and bought used steel angle iron for the structure and 11gauge diamond plate for the top.

Of course this was before the war started:p
Now steel is about twice what it was.

I just saw the ramp in person and the video of the jump yesterday. Pretty sick ramp, he got a good 10-15 feet off the ground before he busted his leg. It ain't no pu$$y wooden ramp either ;)

Dude thats awesome.

Id like to build me a ramp were i could get high enuff to do more technical (spell check) tricks. And also move it back as we got better.

But that ramp sounds awesome.

i dont mean to toot my own horn but.... me and my friends just built an 8 foot ramp and it is pretty sweet. its 8 ft high 20 ft long and 6 ft wide. its got about a 38 degree slope on it so it kicks us pretty good
