I have concerns about the 440 kits that I install for myself and friends.when doing maitanance tear downs I have noticed a wear pattern in the jugs.you can see where the stud holes and jugbolt holes are located by looking at the ring seating pattern. I dont like it and I know that my machine work is good.is there something that I need to know about these air-cooled 400ex jugs???

nothing real different about them than a liquid cooled jug, they just arent as consistant with managing heat. 400ex studs are also kinda weal and have a tendency to pull out when a 440 kit is installed. there are several companies that make heavy duty stud kits such as gthunder and curtis sparks

thanks, using 12mm studs, they fit real tight on the sleeve lip.took a bit foredom work to get a nice job.and believe me I wish these 400ex jugs were w.cooled(I know somebody has done it,must have)the seating is not realy that bad,but I can see a difference you know.my background is automotive,so there may not be anything to be concerned about.dave coe has been doing race work on big-bore air-cooled engines for many years,so I am sure it isnt a machining concern.unless there is something different about these 400ex jugs.

ooo, that macdizzy.I found his website about 2 years ago.realy helped me to make my old blaster faster.I plan on getting a set of unusable cases and making my own fixture.but I think a call to macdizzy wouldnt hurt.thanks

Macdizzy concentrates mostly on the 250r and a few others. I doubt he has the fixtures and plates designed for boring the 400EX. You can certainly ask him, though.

thanks,I think making my own plate and fixture is the way to go.that way I will always have it.A set of broke cases, a chunk of steel and some machining time.kinda of a no-brainer.but I bet it gets me a nice pattern on my cyl.wall.
