I am going to look at a 2001 TRX400EX with an FMF Slip-on. Anyways what are all the weak spots and things to look for? It is $2500 and I don't want to buy it and find out theres tons of problems with it. Please give me your advice. Thanks!

thats a very good price for it....make sure its jetted correctly, that he changed the oil every 10 hours (different people do different things) make sure everything is clean, the chain is good, the swingarm thing is lubed cuz they get stuck sometimes. ride it first and see how it is, if it sounds and feels right, then its good.

EDIT: make sure you check and see if the airfilter has damage or not, if it has some damage too it offer him $2400 (if 2500 is the lowest he will go) but good luck man

Yeah make sur the flux capacitor isn't damaged, if it is offer him $2300!

Well its $2500 OBO and its been there since Sunday. He is changing the spark plug now (hopefully thats the truth)...

Oh yes, I'll check the flux capacitor.. :chinese:

as long as it loks and runs good i would go for it. some trouble spots are teh swingarm is known to crack, so is the frame in certain stress points but i would check the whole thing for any cracks. the top motormout is hard to get to, but look at it if you can to see if it is cracked. (common problem, but can show some frame tweakage), make sure the a-arms have not been broken and re-welded.

Hey thanks guys I'm probably leaving here in 15 mins to go look at this thing and I'll look it over carefully. I'm not in need of another bike but I would like to get a 400-450cc quad and set it up for Harescrambles at my local track and I'm also a street FQX guy and the EX is a great wheelier. So thanks again and ill post if I bought it or not!

Let it WARM UP and REV it high CHECK for OIL PUFFS out the EXHAUST. Honda TRX400EX is NOTORIOUS for burning oil!!! Other than that listen for any loud whacking, ticking, shaking when revved (crankshaft out of balance, ringing (Crank bearings) worn shift fork, swingarm play, axle bearing play, other than that you can't expect to much.

I took about 10-15 min just squatting checking out my 400ex when I went too look at it, and they guy brought the price down a good bit, because he knew I knew what I was looking for. Just take your time and look at everything that doesn't look "right" definately test ride it... I can't stress that enough. I ripped mine around good... I really disappointed the guys nefew(sp) though, he wanted it so bad... But I had to coin to say how bad I wanted it....

I don't know why but when ever I'm buying something used I always feel like I'm getting ****ed over no matter how clean it is, or how nice it runs, or how it rides, or drives, or how nice buddy is. It's just a phobia. If I had the spare cash I would buy new no questions asked.

I went to look at it, no play in axle, been taken to dealership to get maintinence, good chain, new air filter. On the other hand there is no front bumper, scratched fenders, and a little crack in the fenders. In decent great running condition. I rode it, goes good. We talked em down to $2050 and we want it down to $2k. But I will probably end up buying this tomorrow.

I tried to check if it was smoking or not and there was no blue smoke but then again it was an external disced silencer and I dont know if you could see smoke from them???

Also has a trail tech endurance computer but needs new wires.

i said that because if he has a damage filter and he went and rode, he probably sucked up some nasty **** and ****ed the cylinder over

Young guns are the worst kind to buy from. I got suckered with their web of lies. Some of them are real smooth talkers. You've got to be careful. Also, the young guns ride their **** HARD! If it was me seeing 500 price drop like a snap of a finger i would be suspicious.

What some guys do if it's burning oil, they add SMOKE STOP to the oil and it will keep it from smoking for a little while, probably just long enough to sell it. I think that's what he did to me. :rolleyes:

I'll lool over some more stuff today. If I buy it and I feel I got gipped or it burns oil I could probably get $2k back out of it or trade it in for a new 450r or something if worse comes to worse.

BTW, what causes these 400ex's to burn oil?

they are notorious for valve seals leaking. also you can count on pretty much every 3-4 years on a new piston and rings, unless you rarely ride it or really baby it. burning oil is ljust like anything else, but mainly the valve seals on the 400ex.

also, id say your are getting a good deal for $2k for it. the stuff you noticed is all fairly cheap and easy, can fix all of it for under $500

Yeah I think I might call back tonight and buy it. I think its a good deal. I can sand the fenders down to get the scratches out of them and stuff.

Well for one thing they are air cooled. Not many air cooled quads these days for a reason: they run real hot. And, alot of people remove their airbox/air filter/etc to gain power (yes) and the motor sucks all kinds of junk in. I looked at a couple and they all smoked a bit when you punched it real good.... It really sucks ***...

It's kind of mysterious why they do it, there is alot of different guesses why they burn oil...
