I used a "uni-bit" to drill my holes. Its basically a triangular shaped bit that steps up in size incrementally. HVAC mechanics use them to drill holes in sheet metal. Hard to explain! You could also use a 1" hole saw. If you do not have either of these, I wouldn't try to install them. You could make a big mess of your lid. I recommend using the right tool for the job.

If you're drilling through plastic you could just use a 1" spade bit. Just go slow so the hole is good. If you go fast sometimes it will cut an oval hole in plastic.

use a holesaw bit like you would use to cut a hole in a door for a doorknob. there are all different sizes. they cut a perfect circle, then pop in your vents.

I picked up a 1" spade bit at walmart, like one of the other Bros said "go slow it can pull and cut an oval instead of a circle. This will happen just as it pushes through the last of the material.
