reverse switch problem on a Yamaha Big Bear

I have a 1998 Yamaha Big Bear 4X4. It goes into reverse smoothly when you turn the reverse switch and click the pedal. But it won't come back out of reverse. If I turn the engine off, it will click right out of reverse with no problem. What's up?The cable length seems fine, no slack. Is there a solenoid or electrical switch involved? I haven't had the bike long and don't have a clue. Any help will be appreciated!

your idle is too high, try lowering the idle down a bit and it should work fine.

Adjusting the idle isn't the answer. If I turn the engine off, it clicks right out of reverse. Is there a solenoid or electrical connector that could be involved?
