shifting forks, or tranny!, did it make a grinding noise when they went and was it slowly going out, of all of a sudden?
Could be the clutch also!

for the most part take it in if you don't know what to do, or tear into it and see what is wrong or broke!

it did it to me once, on a friends 400ex, and it was the gears, and shifting forks! costed a few $$$.$$

It's more than likely shift forks I would guess. When I broke second gear on mine it stopped that bike all at once when it broke with no waring what so ever and locked everything up solid. I would send it to someone that knows what they are doing. Me and my dad did mine by our selves but we have been all kinds of engines for a long time. If you did blow the tranny like I did it will be close to 1200 dollars.

I had something similar happen to me with a 400ex a few years back. It turned out to be only a two dollar spring. Still had to split the cases to fix it.
I think it was a gearshift return spring and it was really a fluke.

You might get lucky.
