My son is starting to outgrow his LT80. I still have a 250r frame that I was thinking about putting a CR80 motor on. Would this be competitive? Any tips..I'm sure it's been done before.

It would be very competitive but I would go with the CR85 motor.

You can send the cr80 to a engine builder like Hetrick & JB Racing and have the the crank stroked. Ours are stroked to 89cc

Thanks for the info.

Any recomendations? Like gearing, tire size. Did you do any other mods to the frame?

If you can get a back issue of dirt wheels magazine September 2003 it has a real good article on a guy who used a 250r and what he did, and some good pictures

On my sons we use a pro circuit pipe with the tabs altered, it is a fischer frame built for a cr80

I won the bid for the cr80 on ebay. Hopefully we will be building a mini quad this weekend.

I am planning on modifing the cr pipe to work.

I will read the article and see what he used for gearing and post tonight, maybe it will help you I know they used a kx motor

In the article they used a 520 chain with a 14/38 ratio on 250r frame hope this helps

i have 6 cr85 hybid quads 3of them are on 400ex 1 on a trx 90 1 is a bud fischer 1 is on a lt 250r and all of them we run the 420 chains and the gears are around 14 or 15 fronts and 48 up to 51 on the rear you can see one of them in the minis for sale in this fourm i think that the 520 is to much we had no promblems with the 420 stuff but thats just what i think thanks and it is also on this page in the tricked out minis fourm

Thats what I run on my sons is a 420, I was just stating what was in the article. I agree I would think the 520 is to much but I have never used a 250r frame

Upgrade to a 428 chain. I think the 420 chain is a little to light for the extra wieght it has to move. But the 520 is just a overkill. Spocket specialist has the front sprockets for the 428 chain on the cr motor.:)

I picked the bike up this week and I plan on starting to project next week.

I just ran across a good deal on a blaster. I allready have the 250r frame....witch one is better for a mini????

thanks

if your son fits the 250r chassis then the 250r is byfar the best choice they wont be that far apart in weight depending on how you install the cr85 thanks

The Blaster frame is the best choice because it's lighter.
250R frames have been used, but are heavy.

i have done one on a blaster and it was 290 lbs and i have three of them on 400ex chassis and they are 305 to 310 lbs the trx cr 85 quad is 260.lbs with daul a arams i have a lt 250r chassis it is 270 lbs and i have a fischer chassis it is 250lbs all of these weights are from the same scale and the all work well thanks

We are using an aftermarket 250r frame (tt version).it works very well, but a stock r frame is a little heavy.also most tt style parts will hold up fine on a mini mxer,to save weight.

I got the motor mounted in place today. The only thing giving me trouble is the kick start. I mounted the motor and the kick start hits the frame. Can I cut and weld the kick starter back together at a different angle or is there something else that will fit???

I assume it's the blaster frame. I had the same problem with the cr80 motor I cut part of the cr's kick starter and welded the blasters kick starter on to it worked great. I did have to grind part of the bracket that held the spring for the rear brakes pedal. I do have a picture of it.

I went with the R frame. By the time I put disk brakes and widdened the blaster out..I would have went way over budjet.

Coming along good. I was hoping to be at Ballance's this Saturday but I think that's pushing it.

Things I lack

I still have to get correct gearing. I think I'm gonna buy 428 chaing and buy the CR gears and modify them to fit the R hub.

Radiator hoses...this is no big deal..I will just hall the quad to the autoparts store this weekend and try hoses till we get some that will work.

Air filter...I will most likely take the airbox off the cr until I can come up with something better.

We should be ready buy the first race.

call james up,he can call rebel gear and they will make a 428 sprocket any size to fit right on your 250r hub for about 35-40 $.we run a 428 with no problems yet.i think we run a 14 & 55 if that helps.if he has trouble bogging it down learning to ride it try some eton rear wheels with the 18x6.5x8 tires.it made ours run alot cooler & didn't have to slip the clutch as much.later sean
