How do you tell the difference between the right case half for the 86-87 and 88-89? I just bought a used on on ebay and I forgot to ask what year it was for. Are they interchangeable? I noticed the bearings have different part #'s for thr different years also.

The 86/87 were silver & the 88/89 were black. The 89 had 8 balls in the crank bearing, were the others only had 7. All years are interchangeable.

Are you talking about the color on the insides of the cases?

Like robby said, but the colors are on the outside of the case. If the paint is polished off or repainted you can tell by the case number on the bottom left case by the shift shaft hole.

1986 - TB06E - 1000014 to 1021097

1987 - TB06E - 8000015 to 8008442

1988 - TB06E - 8100014 to 8109454

1989 - TB06E - 8200001 to Subsequent

It's the 88's that had the 8 balls in the main bearings. If you rebuild your bottom end, 88 main bearings are the ones you want.

All year cases will work together. I like the 87-89 cases better because Honda made the case guard mounts beefer and the crankcase walls thicker.

Just split the cases yesterday. The quad is an 86. The crank bearings have 8 balls, and the color of the bottom end is black.

Well it sure sounds like ya got yourself an 88 motor there.

you could have a 85 motor, those had black cases and when it was rebuilt last, they used 88 bearings. The way to tell is by the tranny and kicker gears. In 88/89 the kicker shaft had a spacer built-in and the cluth cover had the other part of the spacer built-in. 87-89 trannies had a lower 5th and 6th, 88/89 had stronger 2nd-3rd gears.

On top of it all, theres a hot rod crankshaft in there and the connecting rod has alot of side to side play...contemplating on what to do.
