alright my engine took a $hit.
heres what it needs...
piston, valves, timing chain

i want to upgrade i dont know to what. i've been quoted on doing a 440 and a 460 on it.. and it was quite pricey. im thinkin about maybe a hybrid... i want power, reliability, torque... basically the most of this quad, in this chassis.

i've been quoted an approx. $1500 for the 460 kit complete.

ive been reading a lot of testimonials on here and i just dont know what to do.

thanks
tim

How much are you able to spend, how much work are you able to do yourself and what do you want from the finished product?

this weekend i'll have the price the local engine builder is quoting me on a 440 and the 460 and any of the other options i have through him.

i do a lot of riding on a track. i don't race mx. im gonna start doing some harescrambles, but i wont be riding this quad due to the build of it (+3 a-arms, ext axle).. but i'll be riding as relay on a kfx440. so basically, im just riding this quad to beat the pi$$ out of it honestly, and strengthen my riding skills (which suck by the way lol, i just started this summer and ive got balls of steel, just rough around the edges i guess u could say in riding ability).

all of my buddies ride kfx400s and kick my *** in speed.

i will be doing some trail riding/ hillclimbs... but not much, just for seat time.

as work to do myself.... i dont know much about atv engines. its currently at a friends garage that can do all the engine work and has many years of experience. he gets all his machinist work done from a local engine builder... its top notch. i'm thinking about just buying an engine with work already done to it. its kind of risky. i know... thats why im skeptical.

Nice looking 400. where did you get the grafix? and how much? Is the black plastic hard to keep clean.

You didn't say how much you are able to spend but if you just want to build something to beat the pi$$ out of I guess money isn't a real issue.

My riding skills aren't that great either:( But I think you'll gain better riding skills with an under powered quad trying to keep up with the faster riders. Maybe put some $'s into improving the suspension (shocks).

if i were you i would go with the 426 kit. its cheaper and alot more reliable, and imo better power than the 440's i have ridden.

oh yeah i did forget to mention about how much im willing to spend...

... i've come to the realization, thats its not gonna be cheap. and id much much rather spend more to get it done right, and so it will last, with the maximum amount of power.

so if i hafta fork out $1400, i will. i would much much prefer to pay less, obviously. the guy gave me a rough quote of $600 to get it back to where it was before.

im gonna talk to him about possibly doin the 426, because it is more "rideable" from what i understand. i'll have definite prices from him this weekend

those are maier plastics we hacked up to make them racecut or whatever. the graphics are from whiteknuckle graphics. they have a decent variety of graphics kits. it kind of resembles that 450r kit duncan makes called the "elinsore" (spelling?) that is red/white/blue on black plastic.

next winter im gonna have the shocks re-done. i want to tear it all apart and powder coat the frame. but its gonna hafta wait, the engine thing is a necessity to ride it- lol.

i see some motors for sale... with work already done to them, but with my luck i'll get it and itll run fine than it'll $hit itself in a few weeks. then im back to here again.
ya dont know for sure how hard it was beat... cuz if its had work done it and is used.. then it was probably beat.

i would say a 416 or 426 be fine for your needs. parts wise you are looking at about 200-700 depending on what you need
$150 for piston kit
$30-$100 for gaskets
$300 for crank if needed
$150 for cam if needed

then there is labor
The shop i work at has these prices
$49 bore cylinder
$250 full race port
$150 to split cases
general labor charge of $52 an hour

so you are lookin at about $1100-1400 for a decent motor.
