i think i am the first to do this, hope it was worth while... the tapped hole is 1'2 pipe threading.

Auto meter guage oil temp sensor on ebay:42.00
Guage new=120.00
clutch cover gasket:14.00
pipe fittings 6.00
machine shop work 25.00
oil:8.00
filter:3.00
------------

as you know, any metal expanses with heat. the temp. probe shown in the picture is brass.the black line is also brass, covered in insulating rubber. as the oil heats up, it expanses the brass, traves up the line, and pushing on the dial. how far it expanses is what shows up on the dial. it does not need a 12v source, because its mechanical.

i thought of this idea when i could not find a producer of something like this. i thought it would give me an idea of how much abuse the clutch and gears are taking, plus i think i overheated her last time i was at the dunes. also, it will give me an idea on when it is warmed up fully, or too hot am i the first one to do this?

i think i might put one in the top end...

Where and how is the sending unit mounted?

seems like an awful lot of work and expense for an oil temp gauge. You can get one that replaces your dipstick, goes right into the oil resivour, no fabrication involved. I don't remember how much they are, but I think they are under 50 bux.

that sounds better unless you already have the motor torn apart.

here is the finished product, with some ford blue hi temp paint. i think it was a little pricey, but for something that does not exist, it was worth the risk, and money. at least i went down the untravled road, and tryed something new...

i am going to start her up and take readings at diferent stages of travel: fully warmed up, how long it takes the oil to become hot. after a lap, up sand mountain, and ext...

after i had already drilled and tapped the oil, i realized that where i put the hole, compaired to the oil check bolt is higher, this COULD mean a few things:

1) in the bottom end, does it hold more that a quart? will the probe actually be submerged in oil?

2) will oil be short on bathing the probe, so i will have to rely on it radiating heat from other sources, or splashing on the probe.

3) i messed up the flow of the oil and starved the engine in critical spots, for example a briggs and stratton relys on a splash of oil created by the crank, so in other words, i may have earned a few hundred D*MBASS points.

well we will see how the guage works, and i still have to mount the guage...

nice work, now give us a ride report....maybe you could buy a oil dipstick temp guage and see how close the readings are.....

ok, im sorry but what does that do just make it easyer to see how much oil you have in your engine??

Temperature.....

it actually tells how hot the internals of the bottom end are. if it works, it will give me an idea on how hot the clutch is getting, so i know if im about to glaze the clutch plates, need to give my 400EX a rest for a few, or maybe not feeding it oil, and about to grenade...man i need to get this into the dirt asap...

so please give me ANY feed back, you wont hurt my feelings, i just would like to know if this was a worth while mod, that someone else would do, or already has done.

to those of you that have oil dipstick temp sensors, what are your readings? i would like to do a contrast with the two, and see if other mods need to be done to make it run cooler...

HEY CHAD502, DID YOU HAVE ANY OIL TEMP SENSOR? how did you know when that stroker needed a rest??

I'm running at 200-250 in the oil tank....

You already asked the questions I was going to ask:p Mainly #1 and #2, I don't know about #3.

Here's an idea if your current set up wont be sitting in oil the way it is......

Use a hollow bolt in place of the oil check bolt, put the sending unit inside the case and feed the wire through the bolt, fill the hollowed bolt with an appropriate sealant for the conditions.

Just an idea;)
