Is the airbox really needed?

Just put 450r carb on 400. Finally got the intake tube on the carb. But I had to remove the airbox to do it. So is the airbox really needed. I know for water repultion and all. How bout I rig up some sort of splash guard and mount?

if you ride in any mud or water i would do it. Even with no lid on my 400, a bunch of water and mud still gets in, just think having no airbox at all. but if you dune just get an outerwears so the sand will bounce off. Maybe a splash guard would work, but might be too much trouble.... i dont know....
