I recently bought a 400ex engine that has been stroked 4mm by TC racing and bored to 88mm making it 450cc. It uses a stock rod and a special piston that has been decked 2mm. It has been ported, +1mm oversize valves, and has a TC 924 national cam. My question is this. Is it safe to use this stock rod? Has anyone ever seen a stock 400ex break a rod? If so, what were the circumstances?
Thanks, Doug

All that work and nobody opted for a better HD rod :ermm:
The major deciding factor is the compression ratio. If it is 11:1 or below, you may be ok with the stock rod...no guarantees. 12:1 or higher and you have a much higher chance of breaking a stock rod.

Are you sure it's a stock OEM rod, or is it a "stock length" rod?

I am pretty sure it is a stock rod. It looks just like a stock rod that I got from a friend and it has "HN1" cast into the side of it just like the stocker. Also the piston I got with the motor is a JE 13:1.

Yeah 13:1 is sort of pushing it for a stock rod. I say a HD rod like a Carrilo is cheap insurance compared to more expensive damage that could possibly result.

I agree get a better rod with 13:1.

They did all topend work... its alot more work to replace the rod.. I'm sure thats why its the same stock rod.

i think I will go ahead and install a heavy duty rod. Tom Carlson says Carrilo rods are too heavy and he does not use the. Does anyone know who else makes heavy duty rods for a 400ex
Thanks, Doug
