The 88 and 89 are a better bike. The 87 has weak head studs and tend to blow head gaskets. The 87 also had weak spindles. Just look it over some parts are getting hard to find, but the lt500 is a fun bike

An extra head bolt? I'd stick with advice given, get an 88-90 LT500. The 87 LT500 can have some head work done on them to get rid of probs, but make sure you see a repair order from a reputable company showing this work.

Other than that, look for the usual. Check the air-filter condition. Grab the rear grab bar and move it back and forth to check swing-arm bearings. Ask to take it for a ride, look for coolant leak dripping under then engine from the water-pump weep-hole. Check frame for cracks, etc... especially on the lower frame near the foot pegs. Wiggle the handle bars to see if there is play, suggesting a bad lower steering stem bushing. No big problem, just something to get him down in price. ;) Take a knowledgeable friend to look at it with you. He won't have your excitement in over-looking obvious things. :p

THE 87 HAS A BIGGER REED CAGE AND WILL MAKE MORE POWER THEN THE 88-90. THEY HAVE ONE LESS HEAD STUD BUT IF YOU UPGRADE TO LARGER STUDS YOU WONT HAVE ANY PROBS. AS FAR AS THE WEAK SPINDLES, NEVER HEARD OR SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT. ALL PARTS ARE INTERCHANGABLE FROM THE 87'S AND 88-90'S EXCEPT
THE LOWER A ARMS AND THE CYLINDER
