Well i want to hear some of your opinions on F 150s. I have a chance to get a 1999 Ford F 150 XLT offroad with 100,000 on it.

Any used vehicle is only going to be as good as how the owner kept up on maintenance and how they treated it.

i've had a 97, 00, 03 & currently an 04 F150 AND NEVER ANY MAJOR PROBS. THEY WERE ALL COMPANY SUPPLIED, THEY SOLD THE 97 WITH 150,000 MILES NO PROBLEMS. THE 2000 AND 2003 ARE STILL IN THE COMPANY WITH DIFFERENT DRIVERS AND 220,000 AND 125,000 MILES. THEY WERE ALL V6 XLTS. MY 04 IS A 4.6 WITH 74,000 AND NEVER A PROBLEM, JUST GAS IT UP (ABOUT 17MPG) AND GO. MY SON HAS A 2000 V6, 140,000, CST LONG TRAVEL, FORD 9INCH 4.56 LOCKER , DEAVERS IN THE REAR WITH KING SHOCKS ALL AROUND AND DRIVES THE SHEET OUT OF IT WITH NO PROBLEMS OTHER DRIVER ERROR.

I didn't think the f150 came in a V6, only the inline 6, or a V8

yeah the came with v6's. my dad had a 97 with a v6. i own a 2000 ext cab 4x4 off road with the 4.6 v8 and it has 101,000. the transmission went out on it at 97,000  . other then that i haven't had any problems besides the back window getting busted from the four wheeler...lol.

The fords have had 4.2 v6's since they switched the body style in 97. They also replaced the 302 and 351 v8's with the 4.6 and the 5.4 at that time.

What motor does the truck have? I have a friend with a '98 F-150 with a 4.6 and it is a pain in the butt to change spark plugs and work on it because half of the motor is underneath the dash. I would rather have the 5.4 but have also heard of them having head gasket problems, my brother works at a mechanic shop.

And to chime in about the 300 inline 6 cylinder, that was the worst thing Ford did by quitting making that motor. Those motors are bulletproof and run to 300K no problem!

My dad has a 2000 F-150 XLT with the 5.4. It has run like a champ. The transmission was rebuilt at 70,000 miles, got water in it oops, and broke a front axel shaft, 2nd oops. Right now it has about 80,000 miles.

I hate mine.. 97 with 125,000 on it.. bought it from my dad at 75,000.. meticulously maintained but as soon as I got it it started pinging... never could stop it.. blew that motor up.. 2 heater cores.. wierd noises after parking it... idle messed up 3 times... all three times were different things breaking...

My dad had a 1999 f-250 light duty with the 5.4L (which was a f-150 with heavier springs) and we had head gasket problem, broken exhaust manifold bolt and some random electrical problems, like wipers going on randomly, cruise control not workin etc... Other than that the truck was really good and it is the truck that we had less problem with. We only used it for pulling heavy loads and on gravel roads for hunting/fishing trips, going at 80-90 mph all the time in bumps. The front end never came out of alignment like it did on any other pick-up my dad ever owned (gm and fords) and we even used it for snow plowing.

The one thing that i dont like is the 4.6L i kinda wished it had that 5.2L. But i really dont need the 5.2L. WE had it up on a lift and a mechanic looked at and he said go for it i had it out on the highway doing 90 and it was all good. Its a good upgrade fomr the little nissan hardbody.

I know the 2000 f-150's had a recal on the cruise control.

My 99 Ranger had a recall on the wipers turning on all the time. Took it in and it fixed the problem. Sure the F150 had the same problem too.

My 01 F150 i havent had any problems, other then the coils that went bad from washing the motor.

I have a '99 5.4L F-150 with about 90,000 on it right now. I've been driving it since it had 20,000 on it with minimal problems I would say. The engine still runs smooth as can be as I only run full synthetic, but I sense that the tranny will need a rebuild soon as with any high mileage vehicle.

Things the 99 and UP F-150's are notorious for:

5.4's have a slight head gasket oil weepage issue

Cruise control switch recall (mine still works fine)

Some will actually spit the spark plugs right out of the head, (issue addressed by Ford in '02, hasn't happened to me)

Windshield wipers go on by themselves (caused by a bad dimmer switch) replace the entire turn signal arm/hazard switch assembly to fix this. The contacts in the switch just get dirty over time and go bad, no big deal.

Other than that and regular maintainence items, i've had 0 problems whatsoever. I'd say it's been a pretty good truck for a 99.....

the '97's had bad temp controll units. when i turned my heat all the way to hot, it would blow cold air at random, a new controll unit fixed the prob.
