So I was totally ready to gusset my frame, when I started thinking, is this really a good idea? The only thing I could think of that would make it a bad idea is the frame wouldn't have any "flex" in it, so instead of maybe just flexing it would crack/break.

Any idea's why I shouldn't gusset my frame? I ride MX and trail ride, if that means anything...

gusset only when needed.

you are correct, the frame needs to have some flex in it and usually gusset work is done only when absolutley needed and in areas that are already stressed or known to have issues.

on a 400ex, the only place id worry about for 98% of the rec riders would be the upper shock mounts

Alright, thanks for the info Pappy. I air my 400ex out pretty good sometimes, but I haven't had any problems, and I only MX/freestyle for fun. So I may just do the upper shock mounts.

On the 400ex you'll want to not only gusset the upper shock mounts but also the foot peg area.
