The handing will be as good as the 400ex that the motor would goin. The cr250 motor isn't counter ballanced, so there wil be some vibration that you will notice. Personaly, If you want that, I would say just trade your 400ex for a real 250r, or sell it and buy a 250r. You will get better handling than your 400ex, the motor won't shake you all to hell, and you have basicaly unlimited options that you can do to the 250r motor.

Exactly, you will spend just as much money to buy a whole 250R rather than just getting the engine and putting it in your 400ex. The geometry is the best on the R.

If money isn't big issue what would be the best option is to put a 250R motor into a 450R chassis. This way you would have a 2stroke in a good chassis and have all the option now available to the 450R. Many places are discontinuing their 250R stuff, and things like calipers and many other 250R parts are being harder to find.

Wrong, the 250r chassis can very easily be made to out handle the 450r. The 450r spindles/brakes/rotors/hubs will bolt right into the place where the 250r spindles were, and the 450r spindles are better quality, and the brakes are better so it's an upgrade for the 250. Plenty of places are still makeing parts for the 250r, Leagars, LSR, Walsh, Burgard, etc. You can still find just about any part you need for the 250r easily.

Wrong! I didn't say anything about handling. He says he already has a 02 400ex, (no mention of mods) so lets assume stock and he wants a stock 250R.
New parts, if available are much higher priced than new stock 450R/400ex parts. Used parts of decent quality are scarce. The part about a better chassis is just that. 90% of 450R chassis' are going to be in better condition than a 250R chassis of which 80% are junk. You can't argue that for every good condition 250R, 8 are junk. I know I've looked at dozens and scoured for a decent R. Aftermarket parts are still available but still pricey.
(Edit:speaking of 250Rs that are for sale because the good ones people hold onto. As far as parts, I'm mostly speaking of parts for other than 86 - because there are 4:1 of 86 to 88-89)

TO Jakeyracer, you could put a 250R motor in your 400ex for probably $1500
but it will still handle the same as your 400ex, it'll just be much faster, so you may want to upgrade some components. You'd also have an advantage in that clarke makes a 5.5 gal tank for the 400ex, great for long rides.

Used parts that are good quality are so easy to find. I built my 250r from mostly used parts, and there isn't anything wrong with it. You just have to know what to look for before you buy the parts. Shure alot of 250r OEM parts are discontiniued, but the ones that they still have that you can buy, the prices are comparable to similar parts on the 400ex, and 450r. And yes the aftermarket parts will be pricey, but they will also be pricey for whatever quad your buying them for.

As for 8 out of every 9 250r's being junk, I would say thats a bit of an exageration. Shure there are plenty of 250r's put there that are junk, but the quads are 20 years old.

I have put a 250r motor in my 400ex and have done a very nice job of it, all parts and fabrication is top notch. I could post some pics now, but I'd rather wait a couple of weeks till the paint is done. I have taken it for a test ride and it is insanely fast and handles well.
