Let me tell you that you are not too old. I didn't start until I was 27. It can get expensive though, I have about $10000 in my 450R,but don't let that stop you. Start out in a beginner class on your stock quad and as you improve spend $ on setting up your machine.

I bought a 450r and entered a race 2 days later. I took 1st place in beginner class. You can race a stock bike and be competitive, just learn to shift your weight. Nerf bars are highly advisable for safety. Smaller tires and an axle help a lot. Later on if you come into some money you might want to look into wider arms and rebuilt or new shocks.

Basic racing necessities for starting MX in my opinion are:
Tether(required anyways)
nerf bars(required in most areas)
comfortable bend of handlebars
Good MX tires
good air filter w/ good jetting
Maybe a pipe.
Numbers

This should be all that you need for a beginner class on a 450. The pipe isn't even necessary, but I find running a stock piped machine is hard to find shift points because I cant hear my engine.

MX is real fun. It's a lil pricey...10 bucks admission to track, 30 the sign up to race, then your first race you gotta buy a ATVA/AMA Card and usually a disctict card for what ever district you're racing. Then you need nerf bars, a tether killswitch, numbers front, back, and sides, and to tape up lights(if your gonna stay in racing I would just take off the lights).

Im 27 and race, the people you meet and friends you make is worth more racing, then the one's you meet at the bar!;)
