Im thinking about getting one.Im not the Harley type although id get a Bourget if i had $$$.Im leaning toward a R1.Let me know what you guys think.Im a Honda guy in the dirt but not sure about the pavement.

Dont go 1K right away, thats a good way to end up a statistic.

Do you ride bikes much? How much on streets? There is a big difference between a dirt bike and a street bike, get yourself a 600-750 and ride it for a year or two before you go up to a 1000. And get frame sliders, they may look stupid but they'll save your investment. Because its only a matter of time before you wreck. There are only two kinds of riders, those who have, and those who will wreck at some point.

Theres a number somewhere I dont remember where to find it, but its somthing like 60-65% of riders who get a 1K thier first year put it down.

dont get an r1 for your first bike. a 600 should be okay but will still be really dangerous

honestly i don't see where a 1000 is any more difficult to drive than a 600.

if you are dumb with either they can kill you...plain and simple.

if you are smart with either they can still kill you...just a fact.

The R1 is a nice bike and I'm sure you would like it. However there are so many great choices out there now it's hard to go wrong. Nobody can really say which one YOU would like better because one of the main things that people look at when selecting between brands is ergonomics...which one they fit on best. Depending on how "involved" the person is in the world of motorcycles they would also look at anything from how the power delivery is, to how much of a pain it is to change the oil.

Look at the things that are important to you and then go from there.

exactly!i started with a 750,sold it and im probably gettin a 1000 in the spring!just be smart on it!check out honda cbr's,my bro had an r1 and ended up with a 954! not that he didnt like the r1,but the 954 is alittle more sturdy with a *****load of power as well!and think abouit it,every1 is sayin a 1000 is to much power and what not,your going to b careful until u get used to it!its not like your gonna try and wreck a brand new bike!

Yes, they both can kill you. But a 1000 can get away from you that much faster. The more power you have, the more likely you are to do stupid crap.

You might say I wouldn't do that, but there'll be a time that you'll unwind it faster than you should, or you'll pop the clutch and spin the back tire where a 600 wouldnt. The fact is your more likely to hurt yourself on a bigger bike, just like putting a learner on a 450-250R or other such powerful fast quad, they're more prone to hurting themselves than if they're on a blaster, or LT250 or 300 EX

Yeah,he got a Busa. I looked at yamaha and suzuki web sites.The busa looks awkward.TheGSXR 1000 looks nice and im liking the R1 all black.It hard to decide.Atleast with the quad it was YFZ or TRX and that was easy for me but im not hearing any good things about Honda street bikes.

the gsxr's are nice!and i agree the r1 in my opinion is the best looking,but the cbr's are growing on me fast,especially the cbr1000rr

I like this one. I know its only a 600 but realy how fast do you need to go. I have heard that the 600's are lighter and more nimble and I think I would like that more. But hell I ride four wheelers what the f do I know about picking out a street bike. haha

well your probably one of the very few then.

The R-1 handles like a dream, infact its been touted as one of the finest handling of the jap bikes. esp when you compare it to a pig like the GSX, or ZX neither of wich is particulary known for its handling. All three are good bikes, neither is a good learners bike. Buy one, and you will get hurt. Most leaners who jump right on a 1k wreck in the first year of riding, and most of those are serious. Dont be stupid, get a 6 and learn to ride, and make the jump when your able to handle the power and ability of the bike.

If you weigh less than 200 lbs a 600 is perfect. If you want a lot of HP get an inline 4 if you want torque get a V-twin. The R1 handles great, and has excellent power delivery, the ZX10 is a rocket ship, goes way faster than the R1, but sucks as far as handling.. The ZX6-RR (636) is VERY road friendly and also very fast. The 06 R6 is probably the most sophisticated 600's, but pricey.

Myself, I am probably buying this bike when I get my taxes back. Only 4500 :o

You all talk like a 600 "is a good learner bike" or it's not near as powerful as a 1000cc...Well a STOCK 600 will pull 10 second quarter miles.
As to ak-stick, you know nothing the gixxer is not a pig nor the ZX-10 you just go along with the whole "R1 scene" you see it in the movies and hear the name from people and think it is the baddest out there when in reality it is the slowest litre bike of the big 4. Suzuki's GSX1000R was Bike of the year.

And to jay300: the ZX6-RR is not the 636, it's a 599 with a matching lower cowl rather then the black. The Kawasaki ZX-6R is the 636.

As to whoever stated honda doesn't make good street bikes, Their 600RR was put up against a ducati 999 and a suzuki GSX1000, so to be put into that shoot out for bike of the year says enough in it's own. It got 2nd.:cool:. It puts out the best times against the true 600's. But one thing i will agree with you on is the 2k6 R6 is supposed to be an absolute beast redline roof at 20,000 rpms.

i think all manufacturers are making their bikes pretty comparable these days....everyone is trying to stay a step ahead of the next. I had owned a gsxr 750 for about 4 years and sold it this summer..i've riden gixxer 1000s and R1's and 929's 954's you name it and i felt so more more comfortable on my 750. I've riden 600's and that would probably be my next bike. 600 class bikes are now making over 100hp at the rear wheel. thats on a 350 pound bike!...for what reason would you need a 1000? just to walk around saying..oh look i have a 1000..i'm special...well if you can ride it doesnt matter on the size of the bike. I've seen many guys who thought they were big **** with their 1000's get spanked by 600's and 750's...go ride one before you buy. You may change your mind.

well i've had a few guys that i knew get killed over the last couple years...most of them inexperienced and on machines they shouldnt have been on...i've been lucky and been down but only at slow speeds...i've also parted out a lot of Liter bikes for friends that have trashed them because they couldnt handle them...so i just speaking from experience...

Ducati is developing a model that uses the 1000 dual spark motor, but only the front cylinder is present so it's a single. Where the vertical cylinder goes there is a supercharger built right onto the crank. So stock it's going to be a 500cc supercharged desmodromic controled bike. Probably super light as well. Would be fun for the smaller riders hehe

Ive got nothing against the Honda,personally im a Honda guy.These both seem nice.Its just that the few guys i know with bikes say that the Honda isnt as good as the Yamaha or Suzuki.Thanks for all the feedback,keep it coming.I probably wont get one until spring anyway.

Sounds like that dealer just wanted all of your money ;) The phrase tune-up is not used until atleast 40,000 miles or more (pending if you race). There is the same maintenance in a Ducati as there is a Honda, and trust me on this one; I had to pay for both factory certifications heh. One of Ducs weak spots though are the wiring harnesses, all the connectors are made on machines instead of hand crimped, they always fail.

Other than that, parts are just expensive as expected, and Ducati service labor rates may be high, depends on who you goto ;)

i like all of the bikes but just because im a honda guy im gonna have to say the honda cbr600 is a good bike. you dont need a 1000. just get the 600 and do what us 4 wheeler guys do best, start addin stuff to it.

That was my next question.I went to the Honda place yesterday and saw that orange 600 pictured and a "04" 1000RR.Both looked great.My buddy works there and said that you dont need to mod them as much as a quad,although you could.He said a pipe and frame guards would be enough.Unlike a quad where you constantly need and use peak power,bouncing off the rev limiter,a sport bike hardly uses all of its power in most cases.He did mention that he knows people that race that use all that power but that the average rider doesnt.Agree or disagree?

Very much agreed. You have to think, you have 100+ horse being held to the ground by a max of like 6 sq. inches of tire and about 600 pds(w/ rider) on it. Many people don't try to and never will try to use all the power. Honda's are a lot better bikes then they were years ago. For the longest time Suzuki just ruled, and they are still top of the line, but the other compaies are starting to catch up. One main problem I find in Honda's is that they are uncomfortable, esp. that rc51, awesome in curves, but uncomfortable. And this just isn't from me, but from many Honda owners I ride with.

I sold my quad and bought a bike a couple of months ago, I bought the 2005 Gsxr750 20th aniversary edition. I love it, I also like honda on dirt but Suzuki is lookin good on the road. bike costs $10,000i, insurance $214 a year and $100 a month for the life of the loan. You can't beat that.

The new CBR Repsol is one of my favorite bikes. My buddy had an RC51 and that thing was a torque monster. Sounds like a harley, but runs like a race bike. New R6's look like they'll be pretty sweet too. 17,500 RPM redline!

That picture doesn't do the bike justice by the way. If anyone has ever seen it in person you could certainly attest to this. The blue looks black most of the time unless the sun hits it then you can see the blue.

First off, I know I'm young. But if I was to get a crotch rocket, it would be a 2006 R6 L.E. Yellow and Black. They are just sick looking. But it wont happen for a long time anyway.

P.S. Just noticed the bike pictured is R1. Oh well, still looks cool.

You definatly dont want a 600, you'll be back to the dealer after 3 months. I think you want to go as much power as you can without sacraficing handling. On the street you want power for fun but you NEED something for the "oh ****" factor. Cause with big bore power comes alot more of the "Oh ****s"
