ok i dont know a lot about motors but what is this? the rx-8 and the rx-7 both have these and just wanted to know what a 1.3-liter RENESIS 2-rotor rotary engine is.....

it is a Wankel motor, more commonly knowns as a rotarty. IT has traingle shaped rotors that rotate inside an oblong combustion chamber. for a relativley small abount of diplacement these motors put up some big numbers. that 1.3 liter, or 1300cc motor in stock form makes about 175 HP. torqu numbers are not that great but in a small car alot of torque is not needed. You can make some nice little drag cars out of these motors as well. a few companies make kits for a 3 rotor or even a 4 rotor motor. THis would be like taking a 4 cyl. and making it into a v-8. if i can find it i will try adn post the video of an RX-7 with a 4-rotor engine. it ran a 10 in the 1/4 mile. at an idle it sounds like a v-8, has a very nice rumble to it.

I dont care for them. From the factory, gas mileage is horrible compared to the output of the motor, they burn oil and need rebuilds sooner than a standard motor.

I'll give them credit for trying something new, but its not a superior design.

the points on the rotor tend to wear very prematurely. a company used to atleast make a heat treated point that did have a good life to it. one thing i love is they are capable in nearly stock form to turn some crazy RPM's for a car engine.

Actually it was developed in the early '60's and first used in the mid - late '60's. Mazda has been the only co. to us them.

I dont think anyone said its "new".

What I meant to say is they tried a "new" design, not using the standard cylinder.

Replacing the sequential turbos with a single larger unit, and some other engine work you can ver easily get 400-500 hp out of that 1.3 liter engine. And, they usually still get 20mpg highway at 400+hp.

It's also very easy to make a rotary a torque monster. You hook up a supercharger for higher boost at low rpm instead of a turbo that doesn't really kick in untill you hit a higher rpm.

A mid 90's RX-7 w/ a 13b is a work of art. Get really crazy and you can bolt up a 20b 2.0L 3-rotor cosmo. ;) 600-800hp easily acheivable out of a 2.0L.

i have an 86 rx-7 and it only pushes about 170hp. what make them quick is that they can turn massive amounts or rpms. i think some of the newer rx-7's redline at about 11 or 12,000

Quite a few of my friends own 400~700whp rotaries! Peripheral ported motors sound like V-8's with a larger roller cams at idle and like jet engines while under power.

If you want to know more about rotaries go to rx7club.com or nopistons.com. Click the second link in my sig and then check out friend's ride. You will find two tuned FD3S RX-7's and one FC3S RX-7 that is being built.

Dr. Felix Wankel invented the rotary in the 50s.. Anyone who disses the rotary has never seen a built one run!

This 1.3 liter put down 500 rwhp @ 25 lbs of boost :eek2:
