ive done some research and cant figure out if stock 450 front shocks will bolt right up to a 400 with no modification. some people say that no modification is needed and othes say it needs to be modified. if some one could clear this up for me that would be great and i f anyone has any pics of them on that would be great also

Thanks

after doing some more research i have discovered that you do have to grind a little bit on the older style 400ex but has anyone tried this on '05 or '06 400ex because by the way people are explaining it, the new body style could make a difference.

you have to grind the tops of the 450 shocks a little to make them work.i also had to grind the lower bushings a little so they fit better. being that the frames haven't changed on the newer style ex's im sure you'll have to grind the shocks down

No they aren't really that much better. Save your money, get aftermarket made for your bike.

definitely a matter of opinion..
the stock 400EX shock and its extremely limited adjustability hardly compares to the fully adjustable 450r shock...

as many of the more "cash limited" riders will tell you, they are a huge improvement over the stock 400ex shock..

Very good upgrade for the recreational rider on a budget. Unless your a serious racer, then I would look at some shocks made for your quad.

BTW where in NY are you from, I live in the Amsterdam area. Its funny Im actually selling a set of 450R stockers on ebay right now.

if your a jumper put yfz fronts on. their stiffer than 450r shocks. they lower u a bit to. right now i have my yfz shocks ajusted so that my a-arms are streight lined with the frame n their stiff as rock. did it to my 400ex. all u have to do is grind like a quorter inch of the top by the eye whole.

Sounds like a great idea.......

Anytime Grind and my frame come into the equation = NO!

Just buy 400EX shocks or save until you can.......

I'm one that will try almost anything, if I think I'll have a possibility of working. But when it comes to my frame, naw, not yet. Don't cut into your frame, unless you have the means of re-enforcing that area. If you know what you are doing, by all means go for it. But if not. Get the proper shocks:D

Hey guys, I am new to this chat room stuff. I just finished bolting up my 2006 450R onto my 2006 400EX. You only have to grind the top of the shock towers and very minor at that. What a difference they made.

The grinding's minimal but not worth it. Buy shocks made for the bike!

u ppl are grinding off some of the actual shock right and not the frame ?
cuz u can just grind some of the shock eye

all i did on mine was grind the 10mm nut welded to the frame that holds the body panel bracket on. didn't grind much of it either. its still plenty strong enough to hold body bracket.can't say if the shocks are better or not havent had a chance to ride it yet.

YOU DONT GRIND THE FRAME! you grind the shocks...jesus christ

made more sence to me to grind a replacable 10mm nut versus the shock housing. nut isn't structural. grinding the shock may weeken the shock ( probably not but you never know ).theres usually more then 1 way to get something done, just because i chose a different path is no reason to get upset and or bring jc into this.

you don't have to do any modifictaion to the 450r shocks to get them to fit the 400ex chasis , bolts RIGHT UP!

on the older ex's they don't just bolt up.i mod.ed the 10 mm bolt on my freinds.then they bolt right up.the upper fender bracket needs to be drilled out where the divit is,then thats make room for thr r shock to fit.they work great on the 02 ex.it's very easy to mod.

On my 03 they didn't just bolt up. The bolt that holds the plastic bracket hits the shock eye. And so does the metal bar (shock tower) All I had to do was grind in 2 places and eyeball it to make sure I grinded enough then bolt em' up.

i grinded the bolts that were weilded to the frame.then the divit on the fender bracket i drilled out.took and 10 mm bolt grinded most of the head off.installed upside down, and installed everything back together.they have held up for a year.all seems to be fine.i just don't like grinding a good pair of shocks.only my opinion.:)

I just took the lower a arms off so i could get the angle right and then they went right on
