OK Guys. Well im gonan be 16 nxt year and im getting a job this summer and have money saved up already. My local mechanic(family friend, good guy) have a 1984 red Chevy Corvette sitting in his lot. He is getting the title and wants to sell it. It runs good, interior is decent altho in need of a paint job badly.(Pretty much some TLC and a paint job is what it needs.) I really really want this car. How much do you think it is worth? Good first car? Could some1 do this on kellybluebook.com for me cause its not working for me :(

Thanks

You will play hell trying to get insurance on it being 16yrs old. If you do get insurance it will be outragously expensive

my insurance is beastly... being your 16, being its a vette, and being its red your insurance will be bigger than don vito.. I would say he would prolly sell it at between 3k-4k and you being friends with him he might give ya a deal

I was 17 with a 68 firebird in 95 and never was pulled over in the two years that I drove that car. We kept the owner ship in my dads name and insured it as his classic car with me as an occasional driver. I paid him the money for the insurance and made payments on the car. long story short that car was such a pig on gas that I couldn't aford the payments and my dad repoed my car and sold it, gave me the payments back and I bought a tempo. It was a good leson to learn you have to pay to play.

good luck with the vette your first is allways special.

yea but theres about a 100hp difference in the vette and the firebird, plus the vettes are fiberglass which makes em lighter and they are much faster...

You think an 84 vette is faster than a 68 firebird? Get your head read my friend. 84 vettes handle and look good but they are not that fast.

they are faster than a 68 firebird, put em in a drag race, the vette will win, even if you say its not fast it will still win because of the weight difference..

Your gonna pay through the ying-yang for insurance because you are 16 and its a vette. But buying a vette for your first car is not a smart thing to buy for your everyday car in the northeast. You might want to think about that for a little bit. You don't see many people driving a vette in a snowstorm, do ya??:eek2:

I wouldn't buy it personally. Insurance + paint + gas = too expensive for a 16yo. I'm almost 19 and don't have to pay insurance and could barely afford it with college. Fast trucks are the best thing because of low insurance.
for 4-5 grand you could get something quite nice

01-14-2006, 07:26 PM
id pass on the vette if Iwere you. Gas and insuranc eis rediculous, i was gonna get one too. you could get a nicer car or truck and save alot of money

I believe it was the first year for the cross fire and I have heard nothing but problems no one in our corvette club even has one. You could find something like a old chevelle or nova we have a 1971 blown chevelle grocery getter it's pretty bad insurance is cheap too.

I would put my 69 400 firebird up against a 84 vette anyday they really aren't that fast. The 1984 corvette had plastic front and rear springs:macho The horse power for a 1984 was somewhat tame a whopping 205 horsepower. The 400 firebird had 330 horsepower at 4800 rpm and a torque of 430 pound feet at 3300 rpm.

insurance isnt always high, if you live far from the city. some kid lives in the woods and his insurance is like under a grand for a 94 mustang gt

About the insurance...I was 19, almost 20, and had zero incidents on my driving record. I bought an LT1 Z28 and at the time my car payments was about $310/month. My insurance was $235/month:eek2: I drove it for about 9 months and got sick of the insurance company getting rich off me so I sold it.

inexperience drivers shouldnt drive sports cars, you will end up drag racing somebody and getting hurt. insurance would be more than what its worth.

FYI, 1984 vettes were not fast. Most cars from the early 80's were NOT fast.

Well, it probably wont be too good on gas, you cant drive it in the winter, the insurance is going to be pretty high and just wait till you have your first small fender bender... that fiberglass will just fall apart....

Personally, I do not think that is a good "first car". 1984 vettes are nothing to get excited about either.

84 was one of the worst years for the corvette ever.

Personally, the whole C4 era IMO was a bad era for the Corvette.

Of course, for the exception of the ZR-1.

Which is B-A-D A-S-S.

Rich that looks almost exactly like the one that I had, but mine was a little chev 350 (not original). I had it painted black cherry with pearl clear coat. I allways wanted to get the 400 hood they are big bucks and hard to find. Well thanks for posting that pic I miss my bird so much.

You should probably do a little research before posting. Umm, yeah. They were OEM in 1981 and today's 2006 ...that's decades  They're still offered as replacement upgrades for Vette's all the way back to the 60's. My point was that fiberglass leaf springs have been used for a long time and it's certainly not a negative.

I live in pa and you can get the vettevette insured full coverage for under $20.00 a month!!!!

you will have to have another vehicle for you primary driver. witch you will have to have any way (don't want to drive a vette in the winter).
you get it insured as a classic car, you can also get classic plates and never have to pay for registration again also.

there is some restrictions of course but my insurance company never checked!
You cant use it as primary vehicule a vett it is for fun right!! 51-100% of the time you drive it is for fun or shows!

just tell them you are getting it for an investment to fix up and drive to shows some time and to joy ride!

if it has crossfire injection dont get it!

As a primary vehicle, here in Kansas City, a Vette with max deductible and liability only at 16yrs old, will run you about $200 a month, or $2400 per year. If you get a speeding ticket or in an accident, say your prayers.. lol.

I'm 30, and full coverage on a 2002 Wrangler is $134/mo. ($1608/year). Clean record, no tickets or accidents in over 7 years.

Listen to this man. The 84's suck. They are not worth much money either. If you ask me all american made cars from the early 80's sucked.

If you want a vette get a stingray or a C5.
