I just got around to starting my 400ex framed yz 426 and it started great with a few little glitches like a gas leak from the carb ,and I found out that I may have over esstiamated how much oil my oil tank should have, but all that aside it seem to start good. The ? that I have for who ever could help me is how hot should this engine run? I have a heat gun,and the temp run up to 180 f in about 1-2 min it was just idling I'am running a 450r rad any help would be great I want to get this thing out and see what it will do but until I know that I'am not going to cook it ,It will have to sit and wait.

I use the 250r radiator with air scoops and engine ice,In the
Texas heat.
No problems at all.
Now I don`t let it sit and idle long peroids.
Two to three minutes top.
I would think your alright.

Thanks,I don't think that I will have a problem but I was hopping for a temp that I could compare my engine to.

mine runs at 180 - 230 depending on the weather and I don't let it idle more then 2-3 mins. I have a CRF450 with the athena 488 kit. Hope this helps.

dont worry i have a yzf426 mx bike and they do run hot even stone stock.i just try not to let it idle too long,it will turn the exhaust cherry red in about 4 min of idle time, dont panic its common for this bike:)

I just let it run for 3-4 min in my garage the head temp was around 200 and the crank was maybe alittle hotter, but the rad was only around 120 does the engine have a thermoastate? or how does it decide to move the coolant around.

it "moves" the coolant around as soon as you start the motor.the water pump is driven off the counter balancer on the yzf.if it gets too hot it will boil over from the radiator cap and on the ground.the bikes dont have catch cans

Thanks thats how I thought it worked but I was not sure. Now that I got the cooling problem figured out I just got to get it to run a little better ,if you keep the reves up a little and punch wide open it fine but if you hit it from an idle it will sometimes stall out.
