What is a good upgrade to stock 400 front shocks?? I love to jump at the dunes and also ride woods etc... I have been thinking about buying 450r shocks, but only want to do this once. I am not looking to drop alot of coin, just a good improvement over stock. Also, I was thinking just fronts would help alot, so are rears a good improvement or not??? I weigh about 190 and ride at the silver lake sand dunes mostly.

Got some deals = pm me (no fortune hunters please  )

thanks

elka actually has a Dune edition shock. Elka shocks are a great upgrade to any bike, great quality and functionality. I have just fronts on my 400 and they make a world of difference, but it would work better if you had all the shocks to match.

Works shocks are cheaper....if that is what you are looking for....I am sure it is a big improvement over stock...

Actually, the 400ex rear shock is one of the best stock rear shocks out there. It isn't better then any aftermarket, but It'll git-r-done. Elka sells fairly cheap ($450 or so) Elka Standard Shocks. No rezzys, but still a world better then stock.

for a $100 more you could buy works with rezzies and I think rezzies would be a must in the dunes

i would choose an elka no rezzie shock before a works with rezzie anyday

i am more than happy with my elka rec series on my 400ex witht he gt thunder rear link and revalve of the rear shock

Thanks for the info so far.

I would like to purchase used , so can I buy shocks from anything else that would work the same??

I hear that 450r shocks will drop the front end a bit (and are pretty stiff compared to an aftermarket dual or tripple rate)??

Will 250r shocks fit (aftermarket that is)??

yzf450, 400z etc....

thanks alot everyone

I know a kid that has 450r shocks on his 400, they wear out the ball joints fast because they top out the suspention travel. I cant convince the kid to lower his preload.

I had some elka recseries tripple rates, HUGE improvment over stock, not the best for lots of jumping tho, but still way way way better than stock.

Lower the preload? I thought it dropped the front end, or do you mean that the spring pressure should be reduced to reduce the "pressure" applied to the front end on impact? Sure sounds like I would be better of to "spring" for aftermarket than buy 450's, as they are better.

thanks

ANYONE GOT ANY DEALS???

yfz shocks are beter for jumping than 450r. i have yfz shocks on my 400ex. stiff as rock.

I would go with a set of works over a set of 450r shocks.

Yuuuup,, Definitly better. I ran works for 2 years on my 400ex racing MX and never had a problem out of them.

A set of works would work better on a 450R than a set of rebuilt stock shocks.

Some people say they can (450r shocks screw up 400 ball joints), most say no.

Next question = what changes on a shock when you get longer a-arms???

thanks

I have 450R shocks on my 400ex with +2 arms, and they feel nice. The ride height, spring rate, and valving are fine with the +2 arms, but they may be a little stiff with stock arms (less leverage). They are not a true "bolt-on" swap, since you need to address some clearance issues on the top mounts. It's not at all difficult, and if you're trying to save $$, they are worlds better than stock when running +2 arms. Stock arms? I don't know.
What changes on shocks? Mounting wise? Nothing as long as you have standard travel arms. If you were swapping a-arms and wanted to use the same shocks, you would probably need to have them re-valved and re-sprung. The extra leverage that the longer a-arms have will make the shocks feel soft and bouncy.
