There is nothing wrong with running 450r shocks on a 400ex I have been doing the for some time now and I handles great ... My 400ex is not any higher than my wifes 400ex and her's is stock

The only thing you need to do is set them up for the riding you do..

It's higher, believe me. I had this mod on my bike for alittle while and it was a good inch higher, even with +2 aarms. Save the money and buy good stuff, you'll end up doing it later exactly like I am now.

Yes they will fit

the geometry is built into the arm, not the shock. so it wont change by swapping shocks.

if it does sit higher and all you do is play around....no competition...then you probably wont even notice the extra height.

the only thing that will change them is the measurement between both eyes on the shock. and if a 450R is longer, witch I am asuming it is, long travel a -arms would equalize this.

i believe that eye to eye, there's only a 1/4" or so difference.. easily made up by adjustment..

yes they will bolt up if that's what you're wondering. Geometry IS changed boricua. The aarms were designed and built by honda to accept a certain length shock. If shocks were interchangable why do elka, axis, etc. all sell different shocks for the two bikes?

I have had and ran 450r shocks with plus 2 aarms on a 400ex. For the money you're going to spend to get the R shocks to work correctly on the EX you might as well go aftermarket.

what do i have to do to get 450r shocks to fit?? how do i set it up for my weight?

All these people are basically right. However if your on a budget, the 450R shocks will help in that department. I have some and had them rebuilt. They sit lower then the stock 400EX and I really like them for the price. Are they the best, no. Will I ever have really good aftermarkets, maybe, but until then I'm sticking with these.

You'll have to grind the shock eye down alittle bit. And to set them up for your weight you'll send them to a shock company like GT Thunder, he'll revalve and spring them to your weight and riding style.

how much will it cost to revalve them? and what exactly do you mean the shock eye???

Call up GT THunder, Derisi, and C@D Racing. They'll all give you different price quotes on different setups.

And you'll have to grind the shock eye minimually. You'll be able to tell where to grind when you bolt em' up.

Not everyone has to grind them. Just install the top eye first then the bottom. Mine bolted right up as lots of others have on the ex.

The GT thunder rebuild on 2 450r shocks and redoing the rear to match w/ XC real linkage is around $750 last I checked

no, I mean $750,,,, to rebuild 2 450r shocks to work properly on a 400ex,,, triple rate springs in the front, Rebuild rear stock shock to match and the rear XC linkage. I think Laz uses a single rate spring in the rear for XC and a dual rate setup for mx.

im 220, i ride track and trails, could i just put r shocks on my bike and ride them, or would they have to be rebuild, btw y wouldnt u just buy after market shocks

Sorry, $740,,, Here is the quote he emailed me

Price is $740.00.

I would need measurements from your front end before I could do the fronts.

I don't have a choice on spring color - most are blue.

It would take me 1 week.

Yes you can, That's what Im doing now I love them personally but will be doing the rebuild this summer so time.

From what I have read, The hardware in the newer 450r fronts is better than Works,,,,and you get rezzies,,, then you get into the rear...

All in all I thinks it's a great deal and when he is done they are custom shocks built to work together. He drops the overal ride height and you gain some travel in the rear. I've heard many people on this site rave about his work

in my opinion u could slap them on there and go. revalve might not be needed because your weight will help the 450 shocks do there job. they r very stiff but if u r a heavy guy u will be just fine. for about $200 it seems like a great mod for a stock 400.

IF you have clearance problems installing the shock

I definately would NOT do anything to the eye of the upper shock, if you have a clearance problem it should only come from the little bolt that is used to hold the bracket for the front fenders. right above where the shock mounts.
I hope I am being clear.
Remove the little bolt (although it is welded in there), but if you remove it you can sand it down or sand down a replacement bolt, this will give you the added clearance.

Got this tip from my friend STEVENJANNA, he did this on his cousins quad and I will probally do it to mine once I get my shocks in.

Oh and not for nothing, the 450R shocks are not crap, they are A LOT better than the stock shocks that come with the 400. Yeah they are not as good as the big aftermarket ones but much better than the 400 stock.

Just my .02
