i was looking into putting an xr400 dirtbike motor into a 400ex/250r frame, does anyone know what the difference is between a 250r and 400ex frame?? i just wanna do a sweet hybird...

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the 400ex an XR400 motor slapped in an ATV frame anyway? Some standard changes, but 90% the same motor, no?

So an XR400 motor in a 400ex frame, will give you a higher compression 400ex with slightly different tranny ratios?

XR400 motor in a 250r frame has been done quite a few times in the past. (1990's) before the 450 motors came out in the dirtbikes.

i believe it is the same motor, i just need a kick start cuz i'm wierd and hate electric start... but i dont know what all changed from the 250r to the 400ex frame except for motor position, i'd like to be able to throw the 400r motor into the 400ex frame but i dont think i have enough clearance for the kick start lever., i really dont wanna cut into the frame for a custom jobby, im on a tight budget so i cant really afford to get a lot of 250r parts if i get a frame so i need to know whats different,, thanks for the imput..

400ex a arms will work on a 250r frrame,swingarms are difrferent but i think they are the same with and can be made to work with some thinking.the 400ex frame is taller in the engine compartment as well.im sure you could come up with a extended kickstart for the xr motor in the 400ex frame if thats what you wanna do.

Gotcha. I hate my e-start on my 330ex too, lol. I've been tempted many many times to toss in a 350x motor.. lol.

It's not a quad issue.. it's an owner issue.. lol.

i hear ya,i just finished rebuilding my 350x motor and i was thinking bout' dropping it in but i do like reverse,if i blow my 385 up i may go with it,having a 6 sp isnt enough to sway me....yet :)
