brakes

anyone find it hard to bleed the brakes on the 450 r or is there a specific way to bleed them im having a lot of trouble doing mine so any help would be helpful

I do each caliper by themselfs. bleed one then tighten it down bleed the other tighten it down. I do this a few times till you get a little brake. I have never seem to be able to get it stiff right away but the nex day the air comes to the top and i put some more fluid in it. i do it this way cuz im to cheap to spring for a vacum pump:) .

took forever with my new steel braided lines. little by little and it will work.

I use a lever action oil can with a short piece of clear tubing.Remove the resi.cap,crack the bleeder,place the tubing over the bleeder and slowly pump the brake fluid up through the line.When the fluid runs out without air bubbles ,close the bleeder.The fronts are easy,the rear is a little more difficult because air gets trapped in the cylinder.

By the way,Dont use a old oil can.They only cost a couple bucks at the auto parts store and you dont want to contaminate the fluid.

i know it says to use dot 4 brake fluid for the front brakes but does it matter if i use dot 5 or is that the reason they could be not working good

I think DOT 5 is synthetic fluid.Id stick with the DOT 4.

Get a vacuum pump.

I agree. Autozone sells a vacuum pump called mitivac that works really well. Plus the kit was only around $25. It only took me 10-20 min. or so to bleed my brakes after adding stainless lines.

Yeah it took me about 30 minutes putting on my SS lines on my EX on the front. When they have no fluid it takes forever to get fluid to them. I too am too poor to afford vacuum pump so i took a piece of clear hose and used myself as vacuum. Suck out until it stops bubbling. I will let you know i have drank a good amount of brake fluid this way but i dont care it wont kill you. I used Dot 4 brake fluid. It said good for ABS brakes too? O well my brakes work a lot better I put a rear SS on the 450r last night and it took like honestly 5 minutes with my hose method, hardest thing was pumping brake pedal, i think next time i will remove spring to be easier on my hand lol.

Im with ya about using a vacuum pump if ya got one or can get one.My oil can idea works if ya dont have one.;)

i got them i just used a turkey baster and that worked great but thanks for all the help

when dot 4 and dot 5 are mixed they cause rubber to expand ruining your brakes. Ive had it happen to me. If yours work again you are lucky.

haha yeah i did that on my 400ex and i bleeded for hours and could never get rid of the spongey feel.

I just put a new caliper on mine and I used prestone dot 4/5 synthetic and it can be mixxed with other dot 4 and 5.
