Whats is the average break in time for a completely new top end? New piston and rings and all that. And what is the break in time for new rings only?

That's interesting, I never liked waiting to tear it up anyway:D They reccomend to warm it up for like 15 mins first though right?

just baby it for like 30 min and then start gettin a little rougher with it buy revving it up some, you will knw when it broken it though, because it wont even rev out all of the way untill it is

Get it warm, then ride it like you stole it.

If your rings dont seat within the first 5-10 minutes, they aren't going to seat.

5 minutes at 3000rpm with a 65mm stroke = 1,950,000 mm of ring movement, aka. 1,950 meters of piston ring movement in 5 minutes. 3900 meters after 10 minutes. At half an hour your rings have traveled 11.7 kilometers.

If it isn't broken in by then, you have a serious problem.. lol.

I think the most important thing is the cool down periods.

Whether you run it hard or baby it a bit. You need the cool down periods.

I personally let it idle about 2-minutes and mix in a few gradual revs up to about 7000rpm.

Then I ride her for another 5-10min. Mildly and try to vary the rpms. And during that ride I will hammer on it a few times.

Let it cool for 15 min. ride it 15 more min. more aggressively

Let it cool for 15 min. then I consider her good to go.

:macho

I wont break my engines in any other way now! I've felt the proof for myself.

the way i broke in my KX was start it up let cool down, go for a short ride and vary the RPM alot and let it cool down again and then start riding normal andlet her rip! i allways run the fuel mixture a bit more ritch for break in and of yeah dont use synthetic oil for breaking.

so what is mototune really saying? he doesnt really say how you should let it warm up and be ridden. He says its very important to allow it to warm up completely before riding hard, and then he says you need to ride hard as soon as possible on a new engine because the first few minutes are the most important. so wtf do you do, let it idle and warm up for 5 minutes, then haul *** putting load on the engine, or start it up cold and haul ***?!?!

But, dont use the engine for braking during break-in.
