I have an 86 250r and when I pull the clutch in fully the clutch is still dragging. It will not idle in gear; in fact, with the clutch in it will slowly move when I rev the motor. I bought this bike not running so I'm not sure how long it has been doing this. I just completely rebuilt the motor, and I noticed that there is some slack between the lifter rod and the pressure plate, probably 1/8 inch, and yes the steel ball is in the clutch lifter. I'm using a different clutch perch but it appears to have the same amount of pull as the stock one.

Any help?
Thanks

this is what my problem was i found that the clutch basket gets worn and the plates do not get spread apart enough. you may need a new clutch basket. also some new clutch plates would not hurt.

you probably have notches in the clutch basket , if there not bad you can get away with carefully filing them smooth ;)

ya that is what i was trying to say, i would just go ahead and buy a new clutch basket because you will have to soon anyways. you probably wont ever have to do it again considering the stock one lasted you this long.

I had a very similar problem on a customers bike. After pulling it apart it had old style clutch push rod. Ball was seized and rod was almost frozen and hard to move....installed update kit and good to go

also 86 did not come with this update kit installed. I think 88 was the first year with it.

I thought it was 89? The 86 had the steel ball, the 87-88 had the solid lifter rod, and the 89 had the needle bearing.

you could be right, but i know that 86 and 87 did not have the update. Just another thought for you to check. I would do the update while your in there if you dont have it.

glad i found this thread. I just got my update kit today. I have an 88 R. Any way the peice that has the steel ball in it ( forgot the name) is solid. the 89 has the hole in it but im not sure if i need the steel ball or not. I have the new pressure plate, washer. that lock washer thing, the lifter rod and the peice i just stated. Any way. Do i need the steel ball or no? Can i just put every thing new in and thats it? what else should i check for now that im already in the clucht? the basket and plates look great. my oil was grey thouh i think water got in:confused: and my old lifter rod has rust on it. HELP! thanks sorry for the long post.

I appreciate your help, but from what I can tell this clutch basket looks relatively new with very little wear.

And I also thought I would show you how much the clutch arm moves. It might be hard to tell....

My clutch cable can be adjusted to pull the slack out of the arm, but it takes all the adjustability of both ends of the cable to pull it tight. And still the clutch drags.

cr85rida, no you dont use the steel ball with the update kit. Hey do you still need a seatpan?

89 is the only year with the needle bearing thin washer solid dif length rod and pressure plate. if the ball is worn it will put alot of slack in the clutch cable. try the update kit. and what also helps is a clutch lever with extra adjustability like the billit sun line. the R is known for clutch cable slop even with the update, the perch helps with this.

your basket looks fine.

sometimes if ya dont have the extra adjustment perch tightening both the bolts together and using them to hold the cable position cable works too, but youll eat up cables from fraying but it works till you get a perch.

Another thing you may want to take a look at is the notch in the bottom of the actuator arm that the rod sits in. That pocket gets worn and doesn't push the rod out as much.

What is needed to do the 89 clutch update mine is a 86. I was looking at microfiche and it looked like there is a different pressure plate. But could someone tell my each part I need.
Thanks

It is a clutch update kit. Your dealer should know. Or call Motoworld of El-Cajon. They have 1 in stock 619-442-0941 ask for Dustin Watson. It comes with a pressure plate, rod washed, and bearing. i think it retails for like $65.00
