hey guys...i have a question that Im sure is pretty simple for most of you but I really have no clue....

say my 440 "blows up" and i need to get a new piston/ring etc...what if I wanted to go back down to say stock size instead of the 440...what all would I need to build the engine back to just a 400?

i didnt blow my engine and its not gonna blow soon, I just want to know just in case I decide to keep my 440 and eventually I need to put money into fixing up the motor

stock sleeve and stock piston/rings should be all you need besides new gaskets

You will have to have the new cylinder pressed into the jug.

What? the cylinder is the Jug. to go down from a 440 you need a new cylinder, not a sleeve. in order to make it a 440 you have to modify your stock cylinder by boring it out for the new sleeve, to go back down you have to either replace the 440 sleeve with a new 440 sleeve or buy a new cylinder.

$150 is expensive... and that includes the honing and making sure it's decked properly

he may not....depneds on what brand sleeve is in it. Some 440 kits did not require the machining :macho

If you didn't want to go back to stock, Ross makes oversized 440 pistons. You could just bore and hone and be back on the road, if the liner isn't wiped out. Of course if the motor "blows up" as you stated, it'll most likely take a bunch more than a cylinder to fix it.

every 440 kit unless it is a stroker has to have the cylinder boreed to accept a new, larger sleeve. teh stock sleeve simply is not big enough to handle a bore that large. he could resleeve with a 426 sleeve and bore it to a 440 but going back to stock is not an option unless he gets another cylinder.
